Tophat SC 16 Gold U17 (GA) 4-0 Michigan Jaguars Green U17 (MI)
Tophat’s Isabella Briede and Grace Jackson were a dynamic duo, as each tallied two goals in the first half of their team’s 4-0 win. Michigan ramped up their defense in the second half, but at that point it had become a game of possession for Tophat.
“All the teams are good. And whenever you can get up 4-0 in a game like that, and kind of relax to a certain extent in the second half, it’s great because you can rest some kids and get prepared,” Tophat head coach Troy Garner said. ”Four games in four days, if you can relax a little and get some kids some extra rest, that’s excellent.”
They were able to rest a couple key players after scoring four goals in the first 32 minutes of the game. Jackson got the scoring started in the 14th minute. She buried a ball in the bottom right that had come from Briede, who drew defenders her way before dishing it to Jackson for the finish.
Briede got a goal of her own in the 18th minute when she beat a defender for a loose ball and put it into the back right. She scored her second goal of the game 10 minutes later when Kendall Parks played a ball through to her that she rolled off the inside of the right post before it went in.
In the 32nd minute, Jackson scored her second just four minutes after Briede got her second. Jackson dished a ball to the outside onto the foot of Taylor Meneide who gave it right back. Jackson faked a right footed shot, cut back and blasted a left footer into the back right of the net.
Tophat totally dominated the first half and even though Michigan played better defense in the second, it was too late because it was a possession game at that point.
IMG Academy U17 (FL) 0-0 Aztec Soccer 97 Black U17 (MA)
Neither team seemed to be able to get much going in the first half, but IMG stepped up their game in the second half. They controlled much of the possession against Aztec and had a goal in the 82nd minute negated by an offside.
“To come out in the second half and pretty much take the game to them in the second half was a good thing for us,” IMG Academy head coach Matt Paton said. “[The offside] was a tough call … That’s the nature of it [and] those are the breaks.”
Aztec’s Virginia Charman had her team’s first two attempts on goal. The first came in the 11th minute when sent a rolling shot toward the net that found its way through everyone except IMG’s goalkeeper. Her second was a shot in the 21st minute that was a rocket, but sailed slightly over the crossbar.
Neither team could create much of anything in the first 45 minutes and it went into halftime scoreless. Nikiay Comer came out strong in the 51st minute when she went on a run down the left side, beat two defenders down by the goal line and left off a low shot that was stopped by the keeper.
The game almost took an Aztec turn in the 68th minute, though. Natalie Suarez fed a ball to Shannon Ryan who went on a run down the right side, slipped by a defender and rang a rocket of a shot off the bottom of the crossbar that hit the ground before being scooped up by IMG’s keeper.
In the 82nd minute, on one of the last chances of the game, Regan LaBelle found the back of the net, but the goal was negated by an offside and the game ended with goose eggs on the score board for both teams.
Brentwood SC Pride U17 (NY) 4-1 PWSI Courage Red U17 (VA)
Brentwood scored an early goal in the first half, but it wasn’t until the second half that they proved themselves and earned the win. PWSI’s defense couldn’t quite handle the potency that was Brentwood’s second half offense as they managed to put three more tallies on the board and run away with the win.
“It’s a good win because both teams won yesterday,” said Nir Sveri, head coach of Brentwood. “I wanted us to finish our opportunities a little earlier … They were very good.”
Marissa Pizzuto had the only goal in the first half when she took an unpressured shot from the left side of the box with a right foot. She placed it perfectly as it tipped off the fingers of PWSI’s diving goalkeeper and made its way into the net in the 16th minute.
The next goal didn’t come until the 63rd minute when Brentwood’s Claudia Cagnina found a bit of space to dribble in deep and put a low shot into the bottom right to make it 2-0.
Ashley Pennington got her team back into the game when she it 2-1 in the 67th minute. The PWSI midfielder found her way into the box after a chipped pass led her up field, and she buried the ball past a diving keeper in the bottom right.
It was all Brentwood’s offense for the remainder of the match. They tallied goals in the 79th and 85th minutes to run away with a 4-1 win. Tara Lyons one touched a perfect cross field pass from Brenda Vargas for her team’s third. Pizzuto tallied her second when a long shot was sent on net and mishandled by the PWSI keeper. Pizzuto pressured on the follow up and was able to tap in the loose ball.
FC Alliance A U17 (WA) 4-2 Farmingdale SC Legacy U17 (NY)
FC Alliance was able to go up 3-0 on three goals from Sophia Viviano before allowing two quick Farmingdale goals. Even though FC Alliance padded the game with a fourth goal late in the game, the three was all they needed for victory.
“They’re doing an unbelievable job. This is the biggest event we’ve ever been to,” FC Alliance head caoch Rich Schreiner said. “It gives them a taste for a different level [of soccer] and what they’re capable of.”
Viviano was a vibrant part of her team as she tallied a natural hat trick with the first three goals of the game. Her first came on a penalty kick in the sixth minute when she converted into the top right corner. Her second came in the 20th minute when she buried a ball low from the middle of the box. And her third goal, the eventual game winner, came in the 51st minute on a scramble for the ball after a free kick.
Krystina Rodriguez put her team on the board in the 63rd minute with a blast from long range that banked off the bar before going into the back of the net. Rodriguez then brought Farmingdale within one goal three minutes later when she found a way from close range to put one between the pipes.
Madison Hommer put icing on the cake in the 88th minute for FC Alliance when she tallied her team’s fourth goal. Elizabeth Daly put a perfect cross into the slot for a wide open Hommer who kicked it out of midair into the roof of the net.
