ECNL TX: Heading to Houston
Five age groups are heading to the Houston area this weekend, for the next Girls ECNL National Event in Texas.
On Saturday night, the National Selection Game will also be held, continuing this season’s trend of highlighting some of the top players from each age group.
Preview some of the teams to watch in the coming weekend.
U14
Represented at four of the five age groups – which is no shock given the Texas location – Solar SC has put up gaudy numbers at U14. With 16 wins in 16 games, scoring a whopping 74 goals, it’s safe to say that this team is going to follow in the footsteps of other high-scoring Solar sides.
One of the other teams making the trip that takes on Solar is Concorde Fire Platinum. The Georgia side has also yet to lose a game in conference play, and has conceded just five goals in that stretch. Their clash Sunday is going to be one of the best at the youngest age group.
Concorde Fire Platinum isn’t the only top side from Georgia at this age group. GSA, which opens the national event with a game against Solar on Saturday, is also present. GSA also takes on a strong Tennessee SC side, as well as local club Sting Austin.
U15
Top-seeded in the age group as well, Solar is 16-0-0 with 86 goals and a +81 goal differential. Saturday’s opener is against GSA, with SLSG Navy and Tennessee SC also on the schedule.
With a strong record in conference, SLSG Navy will have a big opportunity in the Sunday game against Solar. SLSG Navy’s 10-3-0 record is impressive against conference opponents, though this game represents a big step up.
Real Colorado National takes an 8-0-2 conference record with them to the South of Texas. The typically robust youth side has averaged 4.5 goals per game playing in the Northwest Conference. An opening weekend game against DKSC begins their trip to Texas, followed by a game against GSA and wrapping up the weekend against Indiana Fire.
Not to be outdone, FC Dallas is also talented at several age groups. The U15s are a tight defensive outfit, conceding just 11 goals in 15 games. Concorde Fire Platinum, Indiana Fire and Tampa Bay United are on the schedule.
Other teams with impressive records at this age group include Kansas City Athletics and Sporting Blue Valley.
U16
The Colorado Rapids are in a solid place when it comes to a playoff spot in the Champions League, sitting at 12th in the overall national table. An undefeated 10-0-2 record in conference play goes on the line against GSA, SLSG Navy and CESA.
It should come as no shock that Solar and FC Dallas are two of the top Texas teams in this age group as well. The former are the top seeds once again, opening the weekend against Kansas City Athletics – a talented team in their own right. Sporting Blue Valley and GSA are also on the schedule for Solar.
With a record of 11-1-1, Eclipse Select SC ECNL has put together a strong season so far. Games against PAC NW SC, Portland Thorns and Dallas Sting Black are on the slate in Texas.
A strong start to the season, including an unbeaten run in Florida, has Crossfire Premier in a good place before heading to Texas. They’ll play a couple of in-state teams in Dallas Texans and AHFC, before finishing out the weekend against Tulsa SC.
U17
There are several teams towards the top of the U17 Champions League standings making the trip. Real Colorado National has been consistently over the past couple of seasons, as the 05s have been able to beat some of the best teams in the ECNL.
Kansas City Athletics are set to wrap up the regular season with this weekend’s trip, currently sitting on a record of 11-2-0. Two of those games are against the Athletico and National sides from Real Colorado, before battling it out against Heat FC on Monday.
With a 6-2-2 conference record, Heat FC hasn’t been in action since playing at the National Event in Florida, before getting back into regular season play after this weekend in Texas. It’s a difficult warmup, as they’ll face FC Dallas and Portland Thorns before wrapping up with the game against KC.
SLSG Navy, Sporting Blue Valley, San Diego Surf and Seattle United are some of the other teams with an impressive record making the trip.
U18/19
The oldest age group also has the smallest number of teams traveling, with just a shade under 30.
Several of the Texas club sides are going at this age group. That includes FC Dallas, DKSC, AHFC, Dallas Texans and both Dallas Sting sides among them.
Michigan Hawks are one of the top teams from a points per game perspective traveling. They’ll face off against a pair of Texas opponents in AHFC and FC Dallas, with a match versus FC Pride sandwiched in between on Sunday.
