Field nearly set for National Championships
Over the course of the past month, hundreds of clubs across the nation competed in regional competition with hope of securing a bid to the US Youth Soccer National Championships in Overland Park, Kansas, which start on July 23.
Region IV (the West region) wrapped up play first from Hawaii. The California teams dominated the results with 13 of the 16 titles heading back to the Golden State. Region IV includes U12 and U13 in the competition, which is not a part of the national event later this month.
The action from Region II kicked off next with a bevy of Midwest states hoping their champions could carry the crown into the national competition. Illinois was the top state at the event with five titles heading back to the Prairie State. Michigan also showed well with four crowns from the action in Iowa.
Georgia enjoyed the best spell of results in the Region III Championship with four titles claimed by the representatives from the Peach State. Both Texas and Florida had three titles each from the 14 available in Oklahoma.
Region I is the final group to conclude play for the remaining spots at the National Championship. The action will end from Rhode Island on Tuesday.
The regional winners (and in some cases the finalists as the winners had already qualified) will join the previous 32 teams that qualified for the National Championship via National League play over the course of the season.
Below is a more thorough recap of the action from each region.
REGION IV:
Colorado Rush U12 girls were held to a 1-1 draw in its first game in Hawaii against Sparta Premier, and then rattled off five straight wins to claim the only crown for the state of Colorado at the event.
Pateadores LA (soon-to-be LA Futbol Academy) U13 and Santa Barbara Soccer Club U15 were the only teams to repeat as champions at the event. Santa Barbara will look to repeat as national champions later this month in Kansas. Pateadores LA was one of three Pateadores clubs to claim the crown. The club also lifted the hardware in the U14 and U19 age groups.
Legends FC was the only club to win two titles in the girls competition, as the Cal South club lifted the title in the U13 and U16 age groups. U.S. U17 Women’s National Team members Ally Prisock and Peyton Perea lead the older squad.
Leahi Premier became only the third Hawaiian squad to win a title at the Region IV Championship with a 3-2 win over Arsenal Colorado in the title game.
Region III
Sunrise Elite continued its remarkable season with a Region III Championship last week. The Florida club won the crown last year as well, but lost in the national finals in a penalty kick shootout to Santa Barbara Soccer Club. Sunrise Elite also enjoyed lifting the trophy at Dallas Cup earlier this season, which was its second straight win at the prestigious competition in Texas.
Tennessee SC 16 (U15 girls) also defended their regional title with a 3-1 win over Tampa Bay United Premier. Tennessee commit Danielle Marcano scored twice in the final to lead her squad to the National Championship.
Region II
Cincinnati United Premier (CUP) Gold U17 cruised to the Region II title with 22 goals for and only two goals against from five games in Iowa.
“The boys had an amazing run during the regional tournament," CUP U17 head coach and CUP Youth Director of Coaching Bobby Puppione said after the event. "I am very proud of the way they played and the performances they put on during the grueling run to the championship. We are looking forward to preparing for the National Championships in a few weeks. We still have more work to do."
Iowa City Alliance U17 girls became the first team from Iowa to win the regional title with a 3-1 victory over Academy United (Illinois). Iowa commit Rose Ripslinger scored both the goals in overtime after the two teams played to a 1-1 draw through the 90 minutes of regulation time.
