Finalists decided at the US Youth Soccer Nationals
July 24, 2009
LANCASTER, MASSACHUSETTS - Group play concluded Friday with championship matchups determined in 12 age groups at the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships. These final games will be split over Saturday and Sunday. Read here for reports on two feature matches and a full list of results and details from Friday play.
U15 Girls: St. Louis Scott Gallagher 1, Chantilly Burn 1
In a division where the two finalists had already been decided coming into the day, St. Louis Scott Gallagher faced off against Chantilly Burn in a match where pride was the motivating factor.
For St. Louis, the attacking combination of Alexandria Massey and Kailey Utley was a constant threat to Chantilly all game long. Massey's incredible pace and good dribbling ability allowed her to get in behind the defense of the Region 1 champions on a couple different occasions. Utley's long range shooting was outstanding. She went close several times from distance.
Both goals came in the second half. Chantilly opened the scoring three minutes into the second half, with Melissa Rodriguez finishing it off. Ten minutes from time, Utley of St. Louis laid the ball back to the top of the 18 and Kali Thomas finished it off to tie the game.
The U15 final will be played Saturday at 4 p.m. EST with the Dallas Texans playing San Diego Surf.
U14 Boys: West Coast FC 0, St. Louis Scott Gallagher 0
In a preview of Saturday's U14 Boys National Championship match, St. Louis Scott Gallagher and West Coast FC played to a 0-0 draw on Friday. The skill, passing, and movement of St. Louis Scott Gallagher were a joy to watch, but West Coast FC defended well and kept the Midwest side off the scoreboard for the entire match.
The first chance came 10 minutes in, when a ball from the right was whipped in and met with a diving header by St. Louis striker Keith Grieshaber. The shot was blocked though and West Coast FC cleared the danger. Just a few minutes later, the California side had its two best opportunities of the game in a 10-minute span. First, a 1v1 opportunity was cleared off the line. Next, center back Matthew Tilley rose highest on a corner kick and powered a header towards goal, but unfortunately for the Region IV Champions, it went just wide.
The rest of the half featured some great passing and movement from St. Louis, but they were unable to break down West Coast FC. In particular, right back Derek Merry was outstanding getting forward, a constant threat with his overlapping runs. Center midfielder Keegan McHugh was outstanding on the ball, showing a great deal of skill and creativity in the middle of the park. Strike partners Keith Grieshaber and Thomas Barlow linked up very well and were also very dangerous with their 1v1 play.
The second half started at a slower pace but picked up about 15 minutes in. St. Louis center back Austin Ledbetter powered a header just wide off a free kick. Five minutes later, St. Louis had appeals for a penalty kick turned down. Keith Grieshaber, who was fantastic all game, went on a scintillating run through the West Coast defense and looked to be taken down inside the box as he rounded the last defender, but the referee waved play on.
Cristian Canales was excellent throughout for West Coast.
The remainder of the half featured few chances from either team and as a result of the 0-0 draw, both groups will face a rematch tomorrow for the national championship.
