The inaugural Girls Academy League Champions League competition is set to wrap up this week at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

Kicking off on March 10, the U13-U19 age groups will duel it out in the knockout competition, with age group champions crowned on March 14 and 15.

“We are very excited about this inaugural Champions League, it was very well received in December, the first portion of it,” Girls Academy League commissioner Lesle Gallimore told TopDrawerSoccer. “The Champions League Florida is going to be the culmination, ending with a full club champion as well as an age group champion. It should be a really good event.”

After a successful group stage event help in conjunction with the Girls Academy League Showcase in December 2021, teams head to Florida to compete for a trophy. The Champions League competition is an in-season element for the league, adding another competitive element to the 2021-22 season.

Sixteen teams across six age groups are set to take part. Round of 16 games are set to take place on March 10 and 11, with the winners advancing, and the losing sides shuffling down into the loser’s bracket. Action will culminate with a final, all at IMG Academy.

For Gallimore, the event is exciting not just for the action the field, but also to come together as a league and continue to build.

“It’s important to be seen by national team scouts, it’s important to be seen by college coaches, but I think for us as a fledgling lead, that is really for and by the players, it’s important for them to have more interaction with one another,” she said. “For us it’s really a chance to come together and keep developing the league. When we’re together, we meet with players, we meet with the directors, and have discussions around different initiatives that we have.”
