BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Samantha Diget (MI) scored with less than two minutes remaining to give the Midwest a come-from-behind, 3-2 win over the East in a 2005 game on Wednesday afternoon.
Diget’s left-footed blast from 6-yards out gave the Midwest the win in the annual US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (US Youth Soccer ODP) Girls Thanksgiving Interregional at the Spanish River Athletic Complex in Boca Raton, Fla. The six-day event wraps up Thursday morning with all of the teams getting in their third and final games.
Diget, 14, of Kalamazoo, MI, said she was trying to be patient to see what happened when the ball fell to her feet just outside the goal area. Natalia Colin (IL) took the shot off the set-piece and Acasia Wels (KS) wound up heading it to keep the ball alive.
“It just popped out and just took the shot and it went in,” Diget said. “I was really happy and all of my teammates were rushing me. I knew it was the game-winning goal.
