Goals flow as U.S. U18s top Shanghai
January 17, 2012
When the U.S. U18 WNT faced the Shanghai Women’s Football Club last week they were on the verge of spouting goals.
In the rematch on Sunday, the levy finally broke.
Despite again giving away physical advantages against a group of seasoned Chinese women, the U18s strutted their stuff in a 4-1 victory that successfully wrapped up their week-long camp in Chula Vista, California.
The U18s had actually competed against Shanghai as a tune-up for the two matches the Chinese club would be playing against the U20s, but the youngsters turned out to be more than a warm up.
Makenzy Doniak
The U.S. side got two goals apiece in each half, including two from Makenzy Doniak, and one from Kodi Lavrusky to go with a Shanghai own-goal. Doniak, who started in both matches against Shanghai and is a Virginia recruit, slotted the match’s opening goal on a laser shot from the top of the box in the 23rd minute after a steal and pass from Anna McClung.
The own-goal came as Isabel Farrell took a corner kick that dropped inside the six-yard box and bounced around the opposition before a Chinese defender kicked it in.
Stanford-bound defender Laura Liedle, who moved into the starting lineup after being used as a reserve in last week’s match, set up Doniak’s second score in the 60th minute.
Lavrusky proved one of the more aggressive reserves in the first match with Shanghai, which ended in a 0-0 tie, and her work paid off this time as she scored in the 80th minute on a one-touch from Reilly Parker.
Goalkeeper Laura Glew and midfielder Ashley Meier were both unavailable as they departed camp early. Meier was in Kansas City where she was honored as an NSCAA Youth All American. Glew suffered an ankle injury and headed home for physical therapy.
