Glastonbury, CT-based Oakwood Soccer Club has been in the Development Academy since its inaugural season in 2007-08, but its U16s have never made much of a splash, until now. This year’s squad sits in third place in the extremely competitive Northeast Division with an 11-2-3 record; it’s two losses coming at the hands of the #1-ranked New York Red Bulls. Coach Kevin Bacher’s team is led by Xavier commit Matt Vasquenza who has 11 goals on the season and attacking center midfielder Logan Gdula. If this team gets by FC Westchester on April 14, #11 Oakwood could take over second place in the division with a victory over #6 Albertson on April 20.
Lou Fusz Geerling U17s impress in Vegas
US Youth Soccer National League participant Lou Fusz Geerling hit the jackpot at the Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex in Las Vegas. After starting the National League 0-4, the squad from St. Louis was the only team to win all three matches on the final weekend, finishing the league in fourth place in the Red Division, and climbing from #18 to #15 in our rankings.
OBGC Rangers take over #1 this month after defeating CUP Crew Juniors Gold in a head-to-head matchup of the top two teams in our rankings at the Jefferson Cup. Both teams are headed to the US Youth Soccer National Championships after winning their respective divisions in the National League.
Real So Cal continues climb at U18
Several teams have shown themselves as the Development Academy got back into full swing in March. Real So Cal continues to climb the ranks and has moved into the 13th spot after scoring a decisive 3-0 victory over divisional leader and #3 Real Salt Lake Arizona, and retaining second place in the DA’s Southwest Division.
Shattuck St. Mary’s also continues a steady climb in our rankings from #18 to #16 this month and currently sits in second place in the MidAmerica Division.
But the most impressive March mayhem performance in the Dev. Academy is that of #23 De Anza Force, who went 3-0-1 in March, including non-divisional victories over #13 Real So Cal and #11 LA Galaxy.
Next Thursday: U16, U17, and U18 Girls
TeamRank is the comprehensive team-ranking system devised by TopDrawerSoccer.com to provide an objective and common-sense approach to determining which elite youth soccer teams are the best in the nation.
The rankings, updated monthly, are primarily results-based, with a nod toward the league and championship competitions that emulate how excellence is determined in leading soccer nations around the world.
Tournaments are also included but at a reduced value due to the many mitigating factors involving such events, including attrition and guest players.
A final layer of executive evaluation is provided to account for variables that often impact results, thus ensuring that the monthly lists are not subjective, but are not purely mechanical.
