Great Lakes boasts plethora of boys talent
We could wax on for hours about the talent pool in the Great Lakes region. A hub of major difference-makers, the area is full of U.S. National team players, national champions and international stars - and that’s just the boys U18 division.
The group is headed by Perry Kitchen, the top-rated player in the Great Lakes, and for good reason. As a captain for the U17 National team, Kitchen brings natural leadership. He’s one of the top defenders in the country but is also versatile enough to thrive in the midfield where he has for various elite teams over the last couple of years.
Akron, where Kitchen has committed, will benefit from his character and presence.
Speaking of presence, the Great Lakes has made itself felt in the first two years of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, having produced three champions in just the first two years.
That would be the Michigan Wolves, who captured the U16 national crown, and Carmel United, crowned U16 champs in 2008 and U18 this past year.
Representing the Wolves in our regional rankings are Josh Gatt and Soony Saad, two offensive juggernauts. Both played on the undefeated Discover Europe team that ran roughshod through four European countries and will team up for one of the deadlier duos around.
Saad is a target striker, capable of putting the ball in net from a variety of angles, while Gatt plays in the fast lane - literally. Gatt can go from zero to 60 like few players, making him a dangerous play-maker.
Reed Losee is yet another gifted Wolves striker with a well-known work ethic and a killer left leg.
For Carmel United, Harrison Petts and Austin Oldham are two teammates and champions who headline soccer in Indiana. Both should finish up outstanding youth club careers with another year at the top of their game.
As 2011s go, central midfielder William Trapp is one of the finest. What he lacks in size he makes up for with savvy and intelligence. Trapp thinks the game well enough to enjoy a good career at the next level regardless of how he matures physically.
Jason Stacy has played in a few big games in his young career which could serve him well in the future. Stacy is a strong athlete and a creative attacker.
Stay tuned.
