Indiana United still undefeated with late goals
SARASOTA, FLORIDA – David Costa really doesn’t mean to do it like this.
The coach of the two-time defending U.S. Soccer Development Academy national champion Indiana United Academy (formerly known as Carmel United) insists his game plan is not for the undefeated U18 team to concede two goals to its opponent before rallying to win the match, but that’s just what the squad has done twice in two weeks, including Saturday morning here at the Academy Spring Showcase at the Sarasota Polo Club.
As was the case in a home match last weekend against divisional foes Vardar, it was Indiana University recruit Harrison Petts who scored the late winner, knocking home the rebound of his own saved effort after SMU-bound A.J. Corrado had played a lovely through ball to unlock the BW Gottschee defense in a 3-2 victory.
None of this was happening in the match’s 1st 20 minutes as the New Yorkers looked ascendant. David Dioisa was running riot on the right win early, and scored a tremendous goal via an audacious lob of the goalkeeper from distance to make it 1-0. Diosa then created the 2nd goal with some good work on the right and then a pass to Glenn Whelan who finished well to double the Gottschee advantage.
While Mares’ 1st goal made it a one-goal match again going into the 2nd half, Gottschee might have gone up by more in the 2nd if not for good goalkeeping from Indiana’s Andrew Moor who made good 1v1 saves to deny Mario Gagliano and Nathan Miller after good play from each of them to get in position for scoring.
Indiana now stands at 16-0-3 with just two matches remaining this weekend and in the regular season. They finish with non-divisional games against Seacoast United and LAFC Chelsea.
