MORE COVEAGE: Day 1 Highlights
Arlington Strikers 1 v. Cincinnati United Gold 0
This afternoon’s U-17 matchup featured two elite teams as the Arlington Strikers took on the Cincinnati United Gold. Eryk Williamson led the Arlington Strikers and his lone goal was the difference in a very tight game.
The excitement started early as Williamson and strike partner Keith Witherell had the Cincinnati back line on their toes from the opening whistle. United goalkeeper Luke Hardwick made an impressive 6 first half saves to keep the game scoreless.
It was not all defensive for the Cincinnati club who held their own with standout forward Luke Treadway finding chances at goal. The best chance for United came in the opening minutes of the second half as Treadway’s shot from the right side of the 18 rattled the crossbar. With 20 minutes to go Williamson finally found the back of the net to end the scoreless tie and put Arlington ahead. The strikers improve to 2-0 on the weekend and hope to leave Richmond with a third victory tomorrow when they play Upper Freehold (NJ).
Oklahoma FC 3 v. East Meadow Arsenal 0
The number one team from Oklahoma and arguably the hottest team in the tournament put on a thrilling performance today. Three 2nd half goals helped propel OKFC to a 2-0 record at this years Jefferson Cup.
Michael Ojeda and Tristan Tippeconnic were an unstoppable duo in the midfield.
Oklahoma was able to wear out the East Meadow side by controlling the majority of the possession, which led to more chances on goal.
Oklahoma’s first goal was due to a miss communication in the back that led to a one-on-one for Munashe Raranje who slotted home a shot to the lower left corner.
East Meadow didn’t give up easy as their high back line was able to catch Oklahoma FC offside numerous times during the game.
In the end the region 3 powerhouse led by Tipperconnic were way too much for Arsenal to handle as they found the next two more times to close out a 3-0 victory.
