Jefferson Cup: Day Two Recap
U-15 Championship Division
Tampa Bay United 2-0 Super Nova FC
The sun came out just in time for this early matchup after night filled with rain. The 2012 Jefferson Cup champions got off to a great start as they try to repeat in 2013.
Tampa Bay United’s Samantha Betters found the back of the net early in the first half. After a scrum in the box, the ball bounced her way and she blasted home a shot from 12 yards out for the opening tally.
Super Nova FC (Pennsylvania) struggled to keep the ball in the first half and it resulted in just one shot on target.
Shortly before half Tampa added a second goal via Grace Zas’s left foot. Zas’ volley from just inside the box was one for the highlight reel.
Super Nova FC started the second half slow but turned it around late in the game. The Pennsylvania club had four of its five shots in the second half including a shot that was saved off the line by a Tampa Bay United defender.
New Jersey Stallions Dynamite 2-0 PWSI Courage Red
The New Jersey Stallions wasted no time getting on the score sheet, as they found the back of the net four minutes into the contest. Outside midfielder Tomi Kennedy made PWSI Courage pay for leaving her with too much time on the ball. Kennedy found Casey Richards all alone on the back post where she headed in the game-winning goal.
The Stallions almost struck again minutes later when Kennedy stole the ball from the back line but was unable to cash in the 1v1 against the Courage goalkeeper.
The PWSI Courage got it going in the attack later in the game, which caused a scare for the New Jersey side with a few corners that nearly resulted in a goal.
New Jersey Stallions midfield held the advantage in the contest as it won every 50/50 ball.
Before half, Kennedy found herself in another 1v1 situation in the box. This time, Kennedy smashed her shot into the top right corner, which doubled the lead.
PWSI would not go down without a fight as they pressed all second half. The Stallions were rock solid in the back as Amalya Johnson helped lead the team to a clean sheet in their first contest in the tournament.
U-14 Championship Division
YMS Xplosion 1-1 NJ Crush FC Charge
This rivalry game was intense from start to finish as it featured two teams inside the top 3 of the national rankings. The Xplosion and the FC Charge typically trade off wins and losses in the very competitive rivalry they have created over the years.
NJ Crush were the first to strike as Randy Smith found the back of the net after dribbling past three YMS defenders.
The Xplosion turned it up a notch immediately after going down a goal - winning five consecutive corners kicks and putting the FC Charge on the ropes for the remainder of the first half.
The second half started similar to the first half ended with YMS getting into the attack and applying pressure to New Jersey’s back line. A Shot from 30 yards out scorched the back of the net to tie the game at a goal apiece.
YMS continued to win corner after corner all game, but NJ held strong. The rivalry heated up late in the game with a couple of harsh fouls, and jersey tugs, but neither side could find the go-ahead goal.
In the U-16 Championship division, Match Fit Chelsea Colchesters showed their superior dominance winning against Albertson SC 3-0. Match Fit’s overall aggregate in Jefferson cup is seven goals to zero.
