LAFC trio joins Mexico U17 squad
Erik Duenas, Christian Torres, and Antonio Leone were called up to the Mexico U17 Men’s National Team for a camp this week. The trio of players from Southern California were the only three U.S.-based players on the 26-player camp.
Duenas, Torres, and Leone were the first three Homegrown signings for LAFC in 2020. Duenas, an outside back, appeared in two games during the MLS season. Torres, a forward, appeared in eight games during his debut season. He scored one goal. Leone, a center back, is still waiting to make his debut with the first team.
All three players were born in Southern California. Leone has been a key player for the U.S. Youth National Team in the 2004 age group. Torres was also part of the U.S. squad during the 2019 Concacaf Championship. Duenas has not been a part of the U.S. setup.
The FIFA youth events for 2021 have already been canceled, which eliminates the 2004 age group from playing at the U17 level. This age group will be in the spotlight next in 2023 at the U20 level.
There have been rumors of an upcoming USA camp for the 2004 age group. Feyenoord Academy midfielder Levi Skyum was reported to be part of the upcoming camp.
