Legendary Mia Hamm returns to coach at Slammers FC
May 15, 2009

It’s no secret that the Slammers Futbol Club is a powerhouse in the realm of youth soccer.  They were founded in 2000 and since then have amassed 25 National Cup Championships, 24 Cal South State Championships, 13 USYSA Regional Championships, 3 USYSA National Championships, 4 US Club Soccer Championships and 3 Nike Youth World Championships. You’d be hard-pressed to find a club as decorated as this one, and would have an even more difficult time figuring out how this club plans to continue progressing and advancing to the next level.

Professional soccer legend Mia Hamm now coaches girls club soccer.Mia Hamm at the WPS innagural match.
Seems the Slammers figured out a way to trump their competitors even further.  On April 5th, 2009, the Southern California soccer club announced a new addition to their coaching staff, soccer legend Mia Hamm.

“I am very excited to work with the Slammers," said the two-time FIFA player of the year. "Ziad and Walid have given me a great opportunity to gain some valuable experience.  My family has a long history with the Slammers program going back to the beginning.  Working with close family and friends made this decision easy for me.”

Walid Khoury, Director of Coaching at the Slammers Futbol Club, commented on the girls’ responses after finding out that they were going to be coached by one of the most internationally well-respected women professional players.

“The girls in the beginning were very nervous,” Khoury said. “They were more nervous than starstruck, but like anything else, Mia’s become a part of the Slammers’ family and it’s normal now.  They see her as any other coach.”

Mia will be involved with all the age groups in the Slammers Futbol Club via circuit training with a focus on older age teams with athletes approaching college.  As a brilliant player who was once coached by the best trainers herself, the Slammers sentiment is that she will use her own life and soccer experiences to help elevate the girls to the next level.

She will join Walid Khoury (2003 Nike Coach of the Year) and Ziad Khoury (2006 and 2009 Nike Coach of the Year) to beef up the already towering club.

No club in the Cal South league has won more national cups or regional championships than the Slammers.  With the bar set so high, the Slammers sights are on setting the bar higher at each turn.  The tangible goal is for the club to continue producing players to Division 1, Division 2 and national teams.   They employ a fulltime fitness trainer, a college counselor and training tailored for the players.  The Slammers employ an intense training schedule, going three times a week, sometimes 4 times, plus tournaments.

“You rarely have a player join our club who’s not ready or wanting to become a college player,” Khoury said.

The Slammers FC goal is to get players to be better and better, to push them and polish them.  Players who come are serious about soccer.

It seems that their coaches are pretty serious about it too.
