Norcal NPL Fall Showcase Day One Recap
Davis, California – Teams from a range of age groups vied for the attention of the college coaches in attendance during day one of the Norcal NPL Fall College Showcase. Below are some of the matches that TopDrawerSoccer.com attended.
(U17) Lamorinda/Bay Oaks 97 Navy 1 – 0 Crossfire United ENCL Onyx
Although entertaining throughout, the match between Lamorinda/Bay Oaks 97 Navy and Crossfire United Onyx saw only a single goal scored, which Lamorinda/ Bay Oaks midfielder Angelica Gonzalez put home in the second half.
In the first half Crossfire had quite a few dangerous chances but failed to capitalize, something which came back to haunt them later. Forward Hannah Clifford’s pressure made her a nuisance for the Lamorinda/Bay Oaks back four but the team’s poor finishing let their opponents off the hook time and time again.
In the second half Lamorinda/Bay Oaks slowly gained control, eventually leading to Gonzalez’s goal when Nayeli Cruz found her at the top of the penalty area. Gonzalez calmly tucked the ball behind the onrushing goalkeeper to give her team the lead and the win.
(U15) Davis Legacy 00 Red 2 – 2 Santa Clara Sporting 99 Green
Santa Clara Sporting 99 Green played the role of the comeback kids, scoring two goals in the second half to earn a hard fought draw against Davis Legacy 00 Red.
Davis Legacy controlled much of the first half with Brook Rubinstein and Mia Villegas scoring goals. Annika Bergstrand picked up an assist on Rubinstein’s goal, hitting a fantastic pass from the left touchline to a streaking Bergstrand at the right corner of the penalty area. Bergstrand coolly applied the finish, giving Davis Legacy the lead. Villegas’ goal was a solo effort. She took control of the ball inside the penalty area and shot across the face of goal to widen her team’s lead.
Santa Clara Sporting came out strong in the second half, forcing a goal line clearance early on. Their first goal came when Nicole Bumgarner won the ball deep in the Davis Legacy half, drove forward and rifled the ball past the goalkeeper. The goal energized Santa Clara and they controlled much of the second half, leading to an equalizer from Sophia Mendoza. Mendoza got on the end of a headed pass from Alicia Talancon and put her team back on level terms.
In the waning moments of the game Davis nearly got the lead back, one chance hitting the post and another called offside, but were unable to find the goal they needed.
Marin FC 99 Blue 0 – 5 Lamorinda United 98
Lamorinda United 98 were utterly dominant in their win over Marin FC 99 Blue with goals from four different players, including Stanford verbal commit Cecilia Gee.
Cecilia Gee opened the scoring early on, collecting the ball and cutting inside before releasing a shot that went through the goalkeepers legs and into the net. Caroline Clark doubled Lamorinda’s lead when she collected a pass inside the penalty area and calmly slotted it past the goalkeeper for the final goal of the first half.
The second half was more of the same for Lamorinda United. Emma Nushi made her contribution to the scoresheet by finishing a one-two play that she initiated.
Gee was involved in the last two Lamorinda United goals, scoring the fourth and assisting on the fifth when her cross found Maggie Maguire open at the back post.
Despite the scoreline Marin FC 99 continued pushing for a goal, coming close near the end of the match but never quite putting one in the net.
