SARASOTA, Florida - It was muscle against hustle.
U18 PDA and the Dallas Texans hooked up for a classic clash that was a contrast in style and personnel Sunday at the US Soccer Development Academy Showcase.
PDA vs Dallas Texans
The Texans brought size and physicality but couldn’t contain the play-making of the their opponent in PDA’s 1-0 victory at the Sarasota Polo Club.PDA isn’t a team small in stature by any stretch, but compared to the beefy Texans, and due to injuries and missing players, the New Jersey Club was giving up more than a few pounds.
Striker Dylan Renna set an early tone with a goal midway through the first half that put Dallas on its heels. Running along the right wing, Renna took a great cross from Jeffrey Eisenbud and finished the play with an authoritative strike. The score was especially important for PDA in forcing Dallas to become more aggressive and come get them.
The Texans got a couple shots on goal but never really threatened, and the further the match went along the more Texas stopped utilizing its midfield and tried to get quick scores over the top.
“We just tried to get a quick goal and made it hold up,” Renna said. “On the goal, I jut had to open up - Jeff pulled the defender over to the left side with him and I had the whole right open up, I just had to finish. Our team has been playing well. We’re ready for the playoffs.”
PDA had several strong performers starting with Eisenbud, who was tough to knock off the ball even with Dallas’ big defenders. Midfielder Jonathan Aguirre is a strong playmaker with a big left foot who kept the ball moving forward.
Centerback Scott Keogh led the defense and stayed on top of his teammates.
The Texans were led by Zachery Barnes and Brett Helm, well-muscled midfielders in the same mold. Both are top class athletes who are hard to stop with a full head of steam, but neither could effectively combat PDA.
