Pro Prospects: Final shots at glory
The club season is wrapping up around the globe for a number of U.S. players. This past week, U.S. players in Germany and Spain found success as the season comes to a close for some. Check out the highlights from the players abroad below.
Wright Way
Haji Wright continued his hot streak with a goal on Sunday in Schalke 04 U19’s 3-1 win over Wuppertaler SV U19. Since becoming eligible for official games, Wright has three goals in three appearances, which makes him the leading scorer for the team during that spell.
Schalke is undefeated since Wright’s arrival in the lineup, but the U.S. U17 Men’s National Team forward’s appearance came a little late for Schalke to challenge for the league crown. Borussia Dortmund captured the league title on Sunday with a commanding 6-0 win.
Wright and Schalke finish out the regular season campaign on Saturday, May 7 against Bochum, which currently sits in third place in the U19 Bundesliga West table.
Pulisic Punches In
Christian Pulisic scored the sixth goal in Borussia Dortmund U19’s 6-0 win over MSV Duisburg on Sunday. Pulisic played the full game as Dortmund captured the league title with one game left on the schedule.
The 17-year-old midfielder was an unused substitute on Saturday for the full Borussia Dortmund side in a 5-1 victory over Wolfsburg. Pulisic had scored in the previous two appearances with the club’s top team.
The teenager has six goals in 12 appearances with the club’s U19 side.
Akale Assists, but Villarreal Eliminated
U.S. Youth National Team midfielder Mukwelle Akale provided the assist for Villarreal Juvenil A in a 1-2 loss to Las Palmas on Monday in the Spanish competition Copa de Champeones. His assist gave Villarreal the lead shortly before halftime, but Las Palmas came back with two goals in the second half including one in the final minute of the game to knock off the defending champions of the event.
Akale trained with the Villarreal II team during part of this season, and seems likely to progress to that level next season as he is no longer age-eligible for the Juvenil A squad.
