Pro Prospects: Spring update on top players
The spring has been busy for U.S. National Team-eligible players in Europe. There have been players who have made big moves to new clubs, as well as other who have established key roles with some of the top academies. Check out how some of the top U.S. prospects have been performing in recent weeks below.
Akale Leading the Way
U.S. U20 Men’s National Team forward Mukwelle Akale scored again for Villarreal CF Juvenil A (U19s) in a 2-1 win over Valencia on Saturday. Akale is tied for third in the league for goals scored this season with 10 on the campaign.
The talented attacker continues to impress at the Spanish club, as he has gained a consistency with the club and been pushed this season with opportunities to train with the club’s reserve team.
Akale, 19, looks to be one of the top prospects for the upcoming U.S. U20 MNT squad as qualifying for the next World Cup begins next year.
Red Devils March Away
Manchester United U18 rolled to a 7-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday. U.S. Youth National Team defender Matthew Olosunde played 75 minutes in the blowout win. This was the second appearance for Olosunde since he joined the team in March. He missed one game due to National Team commitments.
Manchester United U18 is back in action next Friday against Norwich.
Lennon in Liverpool
Brooks Lennon took part of Liverpool U18’s 4-0 win over Everton on Saturday. The U.S. U20 MNT forward came off the bench in the second half for the winning side as he featured for the first time with the Reds since his stint with the U.S. squad at Dallas Cup.
Lennon will be looking to break back into the U21 squad, which caps the season on April 25th against Norwich City.
Luca, Luca, Luca
Luca de la Torre played the full 90 minutes in Fulham U21s’ 0-1 loss to Derby County last week. De la Torre set up his teammates for three chances in the game, but none of them finished the opportunities, which left Fulham with 0 points on the day.
Fulham wraps up the season with games against Wolverhampton Wanders and Swansea City this month.
