Region III semifinals set, 48-teams left
Murfreesboro, Tenn. (June 20, 2011) – Forty-eight teams moved one step closer to a coveted Region III Championship in the quarterfinal matches played Monday. North Texas led with way with 13 teams advancing to the semifinals. Host Tennessee only sent one team through to the semifinal round, but Brentwood 94 Girl Premier (TN) has been here before, and will among the 48 teams looking to win a semifinal match.
The U-14 Girls took to the field in the first quarterfinal matches of the day. Kaycie Tillman was the first to score for Sting 97 (TX-N), her fourth of the tournament, as it faced fellow Texas team AHFC (TX-S). Nicole Smith and Blair Thorpe each added first-half goals for Sting. Two more second-half goals sent the team through to the semifinals with a 5-0 victory.
Another Texas team earned the right to play tomorrow with a quarterfinal win on Monday. The Lonestar 97G Red (TX-S) knocked in two first half goals to take a 2-0 into half time. 97G Louisiana Fire Blue (LA) fought back in the second half and Lisette Hrapmann netted a goal in the forty-first minute. Despite creating numerous scoring chances in the remaining minutes, Louisiana Fire couldn’t convert and Lonestar held on for a 2-1 win.
GSA 97 Phoenix Red (GA) found the net early against SC United Mt. Pleasant (SC) as Jennifer Westendorf scored in the second minute. Lauren McKeever and Amanda Vocelka added to the goal tally for GSA. SC United continued to fight and scored in the seventy-third minute, but time ran out and GSA advanced on the 3-1 victory.
Hurricane FC 97 Rhein (OK) and 96 CASL Spartan Elite Black (NC) played nearly seventy minutes of scoreless soccer. In a back and forth game, Ainsly Wolfinbarger broke the stalemate with a sixty-eighth minute goal. With the dramatic 1-0 win, Hurricane moves on to play Lonestar.
U-17 Boys National League Champion, Tulsa Soccer Club (OK) continued its streak of great results in its quarterfinal match against Steamers 94 (AL). Tulsa’s George Howard slotted home a goal in the fortieth minute to open the scoring for his team. Anson Crouch and Harrison Kane added second-half goals to lead their team to the semifinals with the 3-0 win.
After falling behind 1-0 early in its game versus Arkansas Comets 94 (AR), Jacksonville Fury (FL) scored three goals in the first half to take back the momentum. Michael Della Porta buried a loose ball in the box following a corner kick to level the game in the twenty-first minute. Just five minutes later, Kacper Grzeszcak scored a similar goal off a long thrown in. Thomas Atchison added two more goals to complete the 4-1 come-from-behind victory for the Fury.
CESA 93 (SC) earned a convincing win over Dallas Texans Red (TX-N) to advance to the semifinals at the Region III Championships. Cole Seiler of CESA scored in the sixteenth minute and again in the fifty-seventh minute. After Alejandro Bedoya netted a third goal for CESA, the Dallas Texans committed more numbers forward and played direct to try and get back into the game. Vincent Johnson scored for the Dallas Texans in the eighty-eighth minute, but it was too little too late and CESA will meet Tulsa Soccer Club in the semifinals.
Florida Rush Nike (FL) earned its spot in the semifinals with a win over Texans 94 Houston (TX-S). Jean Rivaroli, the tournament’s leading scorer, found the net for the fifth time this week when he headed home a knock-down in the 18 after his teammate challenged the keeper on a 50-50 ball. Rivaroli’s goal was all Rush needed as it posted a 1-0 shutout and will face fellow Florida team JYSC Fury in the semis.
