Standout Clark shares shares ball and knowledge
May 11, 2009
Kaysie Clark’s best attribute as a soccer player is her ability to pass - and not just the soccer ball.
She passes along words of encouragement to teammates; passes tidbits she’s learned from US Soccer National camps.
She passes on the urge to behave like the superstar she is rather than the humble player she’s always been.
“I love being able to help other people and make players better around me,” Clark said. “Whenever I watch other teams play I look at their leaders and how they respond and interact with their teammates. It’s important to pick up other players and respect everyone playing around you, no matter who they are.”
This explains Clark’s affinity for her Liberty High School Team. While she’s clearly the best of the group and doesn’t necessarily find herself tested on a regular basis, there are other ways she can extend herself.
Mostly, as a leader.
Clark takes the same approach with her sister Kaitlyn, who’s three years her minor. Kaysie attends Kaitlyn’s matches and is always prepared to impart pearls of wisdom. It’s a role she savors, and one that’s lacking a little now that her home club, Kansas City Select, has disbanded.
That means Clark is currently a free agent, and after her high school season she’ll take to training privately and playing matches with different clubs.
“I’m really excited about it, it’ll be fun to have the freedom of playing with different teammates and playing with whoever I want to,” she said. "It’s a chance for me to really get better.”
Shaun Owens, Clark’s former coach at KC Select, has been coaching her since she was nine and knows better than most just how good she is.
“She has really honed in on her fundamentals and become a special player,” Owens said. “She’s very fast, and is one of the hardest working players I’ve had. She’s an equally good point guard on her high school basketball team.”
Clark has been in the midst of playing some exemplary soccer the past few months. Whether it was shining at the Adidas ESP or showing her skills at the US U18 Women’s National Camp a couple of weeks ago alongside players like Morgan Andrews, Alesha Blair, Shea Groom, Sydney Payne, Courtney Proctor, Olivia Brannon, and Sarah Molina, she’s been seizing all of her recent opportunities.
“Whenever I take part in those camps I always try and do better than I did the time before,” Clark said. “I had a really good evaluation at the end of the U18 camp, so I was happy. I always try to look at other players there to see what they’re doing so I know where I need to step it up.”
Clark would like to step it up to the senior Women’s National Team ultimately, and make the U17 World Cup Team in the short term.
She’ll continue to work in the areas of shooting and strength while continuing to showcase her unique strengths.
“She’s really a good passer, and she knows how to put the ball in places,” Owens said. “She just has a way of seeing everything around her.”
And not just on the soccer field either.

Kaysie Clark
Oh yeah, as ball skills go, she’s a heck of a passer too. But that’s just an extension of her giving nature.“I love being able to help other people and make players better around me,” Clark said. “Whenever I watch other teams play I look at their leaders and how they respond and interact with their teammates.
