TDS Scouting Report: NYCFC's Giovanni Reyna
First there was the goal in a blowout win over Slovenia. And then the match-winner against Russia. Three days later it was the opener in a massive 4-2 win over Portugal, and then the cake-topper; a 70th-minute goal against England that sealed up the entire tournament in the U.S.’s favor.
You could say with some degree of certitude that Giovanni Reyna enjoyed his business trip to Europe.
Reyna was the guiding light for the U.S. U15 BNT earlier this month, spearheading a title-winning campaign at the prestigious Torneo delle Nazione with a team-high four goals in five matches. Half of them were match-winners, a fact that only reveals what we already knew about Reyna: that he’s a gamer, that he’s a captain and that he certainly bears all the hallmarks of a USMNT midfielder-in-training. As the son of Claudio Reyna, arguably the most influential central midfielder in U.S. national team history, you would expect it.

Reyna’s 2021 class is soon up for its first official IMG Top 150 rankings update, which will hit prominently on TopDrawerSoccer.com on May 22. You’ll have to wait until then to see where Reyna lands, but in the interim he’s the subject of our recurring TDS Scouting Report series. In it, we put one enterprising U.S. prospect under the microscope to pick out what he or she does well, where they can stand to improve and where I see them projecting down the line.
As for Reyna? Expect big things.
