Texans take wind-blown win in Dallas Cup
FRISCO, TEXAS - On a windy Monday evening at Dallas Cup, Dallas Texans Red defeated Chicago-area club Sockers FC 1-0 behind a second half goal from Jordan Stiner. The match typified the slate of games played here Monday, with teams having to deal with the conditions in order to get a result.
Having lost to Costa Rican side LD Alajuelense in their opening game on Sunday, it was essential for Texans to get a result, while Sockers FC could solidify their chances to make the knockout round with a win.
It was Texans who would start out strong in the fifth minute as Vincent Johnson’s great play down the left wing freed up Corey Barahona at the top of the box, but his left-footed shot went just wide. Texans held the possession for most of the first half despite the wind going against them, however some good defending from Jonathan Krok and Kyle Callender held Dallas at bay.
In the 34th minute, Sockers would have their best chance of the first half as forward Bill Cooney would latch on to the end of a Texans defensive miscue, but his shot would go just wide. Most of the first half was tightly contested in the midfield as both teams struggled to put their stamp on the game.
With the wind at their backs, Dallas Texans would start the second half well and nearly opened the scoring in the 49th minute. Clinton Craft and Corey Barahona would combine on multiple one-two passes back and forth twisting the Sockers defenders, but the final effort would be thwarted by a heavy touch from Barahona.
As Sockers struggled to get the ball into the Texans half, Dallas would push forward adding multiple players into the attack as a draw would do them no help in advancing through the group. The Texans coach screamed multiple times at his team imploring them to get forward and finally in the 78th minute Dallas would find a breakthrough.
In a flurry of attacking for Dallas, they would earn multiple corners in a span of a minute and the sustained pressure paid off with a scrappy goal from Jordan Stiner. Karl DeZoeten curled a corner into the box that bounced around in the box finally falling to Stiner who fumbled the ball over the line. Sockers furiously protested the goal, but the linesman’s flag went up and Texans took a 1-0 lead.
With goals scored playing a big part in tiebreaker scenarios, Texans pushed forward to find a second, but a last minute effort from DeZoeten bounced wide causing the Texans coach to fall theatrically to the ground. The final whistle would blow soon after, giving Dallas a crucial 3 points with both teams having one game left to play on Wednesday.
