U14 Lonestar SC qualifies at Dallas Cup
FRISCO, TEXAS – Everything was on the line Wednesday as Lonestar SC and Hilmar Milan FC faced off in their Bracket G finale of the U14 division. The Texans and Californians were tied at the top with 4 points each so the winner of this match would move on to the knockout round of the tournament and it’s Lonestar who are moving on with a wild 4-3 victory.
It was an extremely chilly morning in Frisco for the match, quite the opposite of the near-record highs on Monday and it was Lonestar who would get off to a dream start, opening the scoring in the sixth minute. Jose Cervantes whipped in a corner that flicked off a Hilmar head and went into the net, though Cervantes deserves credit for the goal.
Hilmar would nearly tie the game up in the 16th minute as the always dangerous Donald Benamna found himself free on the left. His cross reached Christian Geronimo at the top of the box with no one around him, but the shot was cannoned over the bar.
Espinar scored again just five minutes later in the 31st minute this time receiving a ball from James McClendon in an almost carbon copy of his first goal sending Lonestar SC into halftime with a 3-0 lead.
The fantastic Espinar completed his hat trick seven minutes into the second half latching onto a long ball and coolly slotting past the keeper to give the Austin side a seemingly insurmountable 4-0 lead. Hilmar would have other ideas, however.
In the 50th minute, it was Benamna who would give the Californians hope of a comeback poking the ball across the line from a scrum in the box and six minutes later, Gabriel Villapudua scored a nice curling effort to pull Hilmar Milan within two goals at 4-2.
Hilmar would then throw the kitchen sink at the kids from Austin, pushing everyone forward and they’d get another goal in the 61st minute from Benamna to set up a wild finish. Hilmar would fail to find that fourth goal to pull things level, however, and Lonestar SC would secure a vital 4-3 and a spot in the Dallas Cup U14 Quarterfinals on Thursday.
