U18 academy title pictures taking shape
With just a few weeks remaining until the USSF Developmental Academy Playoffs in Frisco, Texas, the picture with division titlists is becoming clearer, even as wildcard permutations almost seem to multiply. Following is a division-by-division rundown for the U18 age group.
Frontier Division
Real Colorado leads St. Louis Scott Gallagher Metro by 3 points, but the team from the Illinois side of the Mississippi River has a game in hand. Metro beat Real last weekend at home by a 2-1 score. Travis Hoguet and Jarrett Smith scored for Metro, with Taylor Hunter tallying for the Coloradans.
Derby County Wolves have set a number at 28 points through their complete division schedule. Nathan Steinwascher recorded a pair of clean sheets this weekend as the Gary Parsons’ coached squad defeated FC Milwaukee and Sockers FC, 2-0 and 1-0 respectively. Goalscorers included T.J. Van Slooten, Jerome Cristobal and Gabe Mateo.
Indiana United, which has split a pair of matches with Wolves this year, is at 22 points with two remaining matches, at home vs. Sockers and FC Milwaukee June 11 and 12. Also lurking is Cleveland-area side Internationals who are on 20 points with four division matches remaining.
Texas Division
An exciting finish is in store here as FC Dallas left the door open for Lonestar SC and Dallas Texas following a scoreless draw last weekend at Classics Elite. Each of the three teams has 3 division matches remaining, with FCD leading Lonestar by one point and Texans by 3. Andromeda has an outside chance as well as they have four matches remaining. Despite trailing by 8 points, two of their matches are with the leaders. Dallas Texans host Lonestar SC on Sunday in a match which should be pivotal to the division race’s outcome.
Liberty Division
A lot remains to be determined here as PDA leads with 13 points from just 6 matches (4 matches remaining). New York Red Bulls are at 11 points, with Cosmos Academy East and FC Westchester both at 9 points through 7 matches, and Albertson SC at 8 points through 6. Most of these teams play each other over the next two weekends in the New York City area.
Mid-Atlantic Division
Lancaster-area side PA Classics lead the way with 23 points in 10 matches. DC United are 3 points back with a game in hand. Those two teams play in the regular season finale at the Maryland Soccerplex, Sunday June 12.
Northeast Division
Empire United have the inside track to a division crown with 20 points from 9 matches. FC Greater Boston Bolts could tie the Western New York team with an Empire loss and Boston winning its two remaining matches. Last weekend, Empire beat Oakwood SC 1-0 on a goal from Cody Winter and a shutout from Andrew Coughlin. In a 4-1 win over South Central, Ben Ramin scored twice, with David Wright and Kyle Herod adding one each. Abraham Bartoah scored for South Central.
CASL Chelsea has won the division. Outscoring opponents in divisional play 33-4 en route to a 10-0-2 record with two matches left. Monbo Bakar has banged in 17 goals for Rusty Scarborough’s team, with other standouts including Jon Ray, Cooper Vandermaas-Peeler, Eric Steber and McAmos Paye.
Southeast Division
Concorde Fire leads with 25 points and just one match remaining, but both Weston FC and Clearwater Chargers have games in hand and could really in the closing weeks. Weston hosts Clearwater on Sunday June 12 in a match that could decide everything. This Sunday, Concorde will host Clearwater, and a win by the Atlanta-area side would eliminate Clearwater from division title contention.
Northwest Division
Cal Odyssey leads with 19 points from 10 matches, but both California Development Academy and Seattle Sounders have multiple games in hand, at 17 and 16 points respectively. Cal Odyssey hosts Seattle on Saturday June 11, while Seattle hosts CDA Saturday June 18.
So Cal Division
Arsenal FC has a 6 point lead over Real Salt Lake AZ, but the Arizonans have a game in hand. The two teams play at RSL’s home field Saturday June 4. The Southern California side strengthened their position last weekend with a 5-1 win over LA Galaxy. Uly Mosqueda scored twice, with Raul Mendiola, Jon Tovar and Henry Rios adding one each.
