U18 MNT deals with illness
The biggest news out of the second day of scrimmages at the U18 Men’s National Camp?
Illness.
Several players were held out of action due to what was reportedly food poisoning. As is the danger with having 72 players who spend a week together, sickness can spread and the ill players were quarantined to avoid further infection.
Among the ailing were midfielders Will Mayhew, Wesley Sever, Harrison Petts, Amobi Okugo and Latif Alashe.
Nicholas Ryan and Alex Tuch were also held out of action Tuesday.
The scrimmages carried on, however, and for a time it seemed like the offense was set back by the many absences.
In the evening match at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, it took more than 85 minutes for either team to produce a goal.
“We didn’t play that well, but we knew if we got a chance to put it away we would,” Woodberry said. “We took advantage of the opportunity; we were talking about that with our coaches today.”
Woodberry is a tall and nimble player who can explode when around the goal as he showed in the match’s only score.
Goalie Alex Long was the key cog in giving his team the opportunity to stay in the game. Long came up with eight difficult saves in a second half that saw the team in white firing away at the net.
Late in the second half, Long got a fingertip on a shot from midfielder Anthony Salciccia that glanced off the crossbar.
Led by players like Dillon Powers, Hasani Sinclair, Paul Islas and Jose Altamirano, the white team launched an offensive assault and was determined to get on the board.
With few possessions to work with, red grew impatient and begin firing shots early in the offense when another pass or two may have been in order.
Woodberry explained that hasty shooting is sometimes caused by more than impatience.
“Everyone is trying to have the coaches see them a little bit and make the team, and you’re only here for a few days,” he said. “Sometimes we forced things, or settled on plays. I think the white team was a really tough team with a lot of good players on it.”
But the red group finally found its opening on a perfect pass from speedy midfielder Josue Madueno that led to the score.
In the first half, defense took center stage, particular the backline of the white team which featured: Giovanni Rollie, Gale Agbossoumonde, Nicholas Millington and Korey Veeder.
The small but feisty Rollie rarely gets outworked for a possession while 6-foot-2 Agbossoumonde provided stability as the unit’s communicator.
It was imperative that the defense performed well, because on the offensive side the white team was sloppy and made some questionable decisions.
Alejandro Cobarubias struggled early to hold on to possessions and the team as a whole appeared out of sync with its passing.
Early offense of the red team was led by Adedoja Akinsanya, Andrew Lubahn and Miles Byass, but the group was unable to convert opportunities.
