U20 WNT roster named for La Manga
The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team will make its first international trip of the year, traveling to La Manga, Spain, from March 1-12 for the 12 Nations tournament.
While the friendly competition consists of 12 countries, each team will play three matches. The USA will face its counterparts from Norway on March 7, Germany on March 9 and Sweden on March 11.
The other countries coming to La Manga are Iceland, the Netherlands, Scotland, England, Italy, France, Denmark and Wales.
Eighteen players were called up for the event and almost all of them participated in the USA’s first training camp of the year at The Home Depot Center in early February.
One player that did not attend that first U-20 camp was goalkeeper Jane Campbell, who was training with the full U.S. Women’s National Team before its recent two matches against Scotland. Eight of the players called up were members of the U.S. team that played in the 2012 U-17 Women’s World Cup in Azerbaijan.
Players born on or after Jan. 1, 1994, are age-eligible for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, to be held in Canada. This eighteen-player roster is made up of seven players born in 1994, 10 players born in 1995 and one, midfielder Katie Cousins, born in 1996.
Three players are entering their second U-20 cycle. Defender Cari Roccaro was a key part of the U.S. team that won the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan, forward Lindsey Horan was one of the leading scorers for the last U-20 team, but missed the World Cup due to a knee injury and midfielder Ashley Meier was on the fringe of making the World Cup roster.
Seven of the players on the roster are currently in college with the remainder still attending high school while Horan, the first female player to skip college soccer and sign a professional contract, is currently playing overseas with Paris Saint-Germain in France.
