US Youth: Utah, Cal South win ODP titles

PHOENIX, Arizona — With the championships field determined on Friday, teams had a day off to prepare for Sunday morning’s showdown. Spectators lined the sidelines to watch Utah 99 and Cal South 98 take home ODP championship titles.

Utah 99 defeats Virginia 99, 3-1

Utah and Virginia was entertaining and fast-paced from the outset, as both teams took turns attacking and taking shots at goal. In the 15th minute, Aaron Nixon tapped in a goal to give Utah a lead that would only last two minutes. Giovanni Munoz-Vasquez tied the game for Virginia, and that’s when the fast paced start slowly began to evolve into a more deliberate, physical contest.

In the 32nd minute, Utah’s Jonathan Guardarramas scored after taking a perfect pass from Luke Madsen in front of the goal, and at half Utah held a 2-1 advantage. In the second half, Utah turned up the pressure and attacked the Virginia backline relentlessly. Utah was able to outshoot Virginia 10-5, and Jonathan Guardarramas added a second goal to secure the 3-1 victory and ODP championship for Utah.

Cal South 98 defeats Iowa 98, 2-1

Iowa came out against Cal South and tried to push the pace and play as fast as possible, but Cal South kept composed and in control, making crisp decisions on each possession. In the 11th minute Jorge Navarro kicked in the first goal of the game. Iowa responded in the 17th minute with a goal from Elvir Ibisevic on Iowa’s first shot attempt of the match.

Iowa’s Alex MacGregor and Cal South’s Jerry Fitschen locked down the goal for the rest of the first half, and continued to shut the respective opposing teams down until late in the second half.  In the 84th minute, Cal South’s George Sanchez put in a penalty shot to give Cal South a 2-1 lead that they would hold through the end of regulation, making Cal South the champion of the 98 Boys division in addition to the sweep they achieved on the girls’ side.
