Williams names rosters upcoming U17 tourney
U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team head coach Richie Williams has named two rosters for the upcoming Open Nordic Tournament starting July 28 in Kolding, Denmark, and the third Copa Mexico de Naciones, which kicks off Aug. 2 in Mexico City.
An 18-player group will represent the United States in Denmark, with the tournament kicking off July 28 against host Denmark. A 20-player roster has been named for the third Copa Mexico de Naciones, with the USA opening against China PR on Aug. 2.
The tournaments overlap, but there are four players who have been rostered for both tournaments: goalkeeper William Pulisic, defender Edwin Lara and forwards McKinze Gaines and Elijah Rice.
The USA’s U-17 pool has had an unbeaten 2014 in international competition with a 7-0-2 record. The U-17s went 3-0-1 and defeated Turkey 2-1 in the Aegean Cup championship in January. In early April, the USA defeated Bosnia 4-1 in the Katalinski Memorial Tournament title match in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, to cap off a 2-0-1 performance at the event. The U.S. U-17 MNT then posted back-to-back wins against Croatia on April 8 and 10.
Among the combined 34 players involved in this two-tournament stretch, there are 23 who are currently registered with Development Academy clubs.
Two players advanced to the recently-completed 2013-14 Development Academy Championships. On the USA’s Nordic roster, defender Miles Stray was on Real Salt Lake AZ’s U-15/16 national runner-up team. Rice, who is on both U.S. U-17 MNT rosters, had a goal and two assists to lead Chicago Magic PSG’s U-15/16s in their third-place victory against Strikers FC.
The two rosters are mostly composed of players born in 1998, with the exception of defender Tyler Adams, midfielder Jonathan Gonzalez, defender Lara and goalkeeper Eric Lopez who were born in 1999.
