#2 Deacs Shut Down Davidson in Home Finale
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The second-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team cruised to a 4-0 victory Tuesday night against Davidson in the regular season home finale. The win gives Wake Forest its first double-digit winning streak since a 24-game unbeaten streak that spanned the 2007 and 2008 seasons, which included the national championship run.
The victory moves Wake Forest to 13-1-2 on the season, giving the Demon Deacons 13 wins in a season for the first time since 2009 when Wake Forest earned 17 victories. Davidson falls to 5-8-3 overall with the defeat.
Jack Harrison had a career night for the Demon Deacons while only playing the first 19:16 of the game. The freshman from Bolton, England, tallied assists on the first two goals of the contest before scoring himself in the 20th minute on a beautiful goal that bent inside the left post.
The Demon Deacons first goal of the night came in the fourth minute when Jon Bakero tapped home a pass from Harrison at the top of the box. Bakero shot the ball back to the left side as the keeper was coming out to contest the chance, but Bakero's placement was perfect as it passed the keeper and rolled in.
Wake Forest doubled the scoreline in the 13th minute when Hayden Partain scored his first goal of the season. Partain one-timed a rebound attempt from 15 yards out after Harrison took a shot from the top of the box that the Davidson goalkeeper knocked down.
Tane Gent finished the evening for the Demon Deacons on the scoresheet when he put home a cross from Ricky Greensfelder. The play started when Bakero found Greensfelder making a break down the left sideline. With a similar build-up to Saturday's game-winning goal against No. 4 Notre Dame, Greensfelder send a cross into the box that found Gent's foot near the back post and Gent scored on an open net. Greensfelder now has tallied an assist in each of his last three games, the longest such streak of his career.
The Demon Deacons outshot Davidson 13-4 in the game, including a 9-0 advantage in shots on goal. Alec Ferrell got the start in goal for the Deacs, playing the first 64:34 before giving way to Andrew Harris. Neither goalkeeper was asked to make a save in Wake Forest's 10th shutout of the season.
Wake Forest closes the regular season Friday night at 7 p.m. on the road against Louisville. The Deacs are currently leading the Atlantic Division with a mark of 5-0-2 and 17 points, standing one point ahead of Clemson. With a victory, the Demon Deacons would win the Atlantic.
Overall, Wake Forest, North Carolina and Clemson are the only three teams that are still in the running for the ACC's overall championship. UNC leads the way with 18 points and a 6-1-0 record. With a win at Virginia, the Tar Heels would clinch the title. Should the Deacs win and North Carolina loses, Wake Forest would take the overall championship and the No. 1-seed in the ACC Championship, hosting each round of the tournament it plays in. Clemson needs a North Carolina loss and Wake Forest to either tie or lose to be the overall champion. The Tigers are traveling to NC State on Friday night.
