2015 NWSL Mock Draft
January 15, 2015
FIRST ROUND
ORDER | TEAM | NAME | COLLEGE | POS
1 | Morgan Brian | Virginia | M
The No. 1 pick in the draft is a no-brainer, as the U.S. WNT and UVA star is an immediate contributor and the best player in the draft pool.
2 | Sarah Killion | UCLA | M | |||
The holding midfielder has excelled in Westwood and offers Sky Blue someone who can play midfield minutes right away.
3 | Sam Mewis | UCLA | M | |||
The Western NY Flash kick off its foray of four picks in the first round with the addition of Mewis, a fringe USWNT player who can slot in as the team's attacking midfielder. Caught fire for a long stretch of 2014 and can fight for a starting spot.
4 | Abby Dahlkemper | UCLA | D
Next up, the Flash grab Mewis' teammate Dahlkemper, a ball-playing center back who can also possibly compete for minutes at the back.
5 | Shea Groom | Texas A&M | M/F
Adding goal scoring options and creativity in a crop of talent that lacks a dominant striker, the Red Stars could opt for Groom here, who can play attacking midfield or pair up front with a striker like Christen Press or Jen Hoy.
6 | Arin Gilliland | Kentucky | D/F
Gilliland seems like a surefire first round pick and would be another top pickup for the Flash here, as she's capable of playing either up front or as an outside back.
7 | Danielle Colaprico | Virginia | M
The versatile Colaprico is another good add here, as she showed the ability to play both centrally and out wide at an extremely high level on a Virginia side that made it to back-to-back College Cups.
8 | Kristin Grubka | Florida State | D
One of the top players available, Grubka is a central defender from the national champions who can add depth to Chicago's back line.
9 | Stephanie McCaffrey | Boston College | F
It could be a reach (or unlikely) for Boston to go this route given the forwards already on the roster, but they could do a lot worse than target the BC star who was recently called into the U.S. full team. |
SECOND ROUND
ORDER | TEAM | NAME | COLLEGE | POS
10 | Meghan Streight | Texas A&M | M/D
With the loss of Sophie Schmidt for the 2015 campaign, Sky Blue could grab Streight with an eye on using her in a central midfield role, a position she played in stretches during her college career, even after already picking Killion.
11 | Jaelene Hinkle | Texas Tech | D
Hinkle has spent her successful college career as an attacking left back, perhaps the Breakers go for her here and see if she can add depth on both flanks.
12 | Sofia Huerta | Santa Clara | F
Forward options aren't exactly at a premium in this draft pool, and one of the best options could drop to FCKC who nab the Santa Clara standout. Has the versatility to play in wide attacking positions as well as up front.
13 | Whitney Church | Penn State | D
After going the attacking route and adding Brian with the first overall pick, the Dash could opt for Church, an All-American center back could potentially fit in as a defensive midfielder at the pro level. Reads the game very well and was the 2014 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.
14 | Havana Solaun | Florida | M
Looking to shore up the middle of the park, Solaun is a creative central midfielder who is a dynamic on the ball and a physical presence.
15 | Chioma Ubogagu | Stanford | F
Looking to add a dynamic player who can boost the team's depth out on the flanks when the likes of Sydney Leroux and Megan Rapinoe are at the World Cup this summer, the Reign could turn to Ubogagu who can hopefully come in and help fill that void.
16 | Daphne Corboz | Georgetown | M
The gritty and competitive attacking midfielder faces questions about her size and athleticism but could excel in a system that looks to play a little possession soccer.
17 | Caprice Dydasco | UCLA | D
A third quality player heads to KC as UCLA's marauding outside back is their third pick in the second round.
18 | Tatiana Coleman | UCF | F
The Flash continue to build on draft day, adding Coleman, an athletic forward with good pace who can both score and create. |
