3 Named to WIAC All-Time Men's Soccer Team
UW-Whitewater's Luke Buchholz, Ryan Richgels and Matt Gehn were named to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Time Men's Soccer Team. The WIAC is honoring its top athletes in each conference sport as part of the celebration of the league's centennial.
Buchholz's three year (2007-09) tenure as a Warhawk soccer player was highlighted by second team All-North Region honors in 2009 and third team honors in 2008 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Buchholz was the leading goal scorer on the team all three seasons he played, accumulating 30 career goals, which ranks fourth in the UW-W record book. The two-time WIAC Player of the Week is fifth in the UW-W record book in two additional categories, goals in a season (12 in 2009) and career points (65). His 12 goals in the 2009 season ties for second in the WIAC record book, which covers the three seasons the league has sponsored men's soccer as a conference championship sport. Buchholz has also etched his name in the WIAC record book with a tie for fourth in points in a season (26 in 2009) and a tie for fifth with six points in a 2009 match against UW-Superior. Buchholz was a first team all-conference pick in 2009.
Richgels (2007-10) was a first team NSCAA all-region pick in 2010 after earning second team honors in 2008. The defender was named First Team All-WIAC in 2009 and 2010. Chosen as a WIAC Player of the Week in 2010, Richgels complimented his honors on the pitch by earning First Team College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District honors in 2010. Richgels led the 2007 Warhawk defense to the third fewest goals allowed (13), and third fewest goals allowed per game (0.65) in school history.
Gehn (2006-09), a midfielder, was named third team all-region and first team all-state in 2007. He earned second team all-region honors from the NSCAA in 2008 and was a first team all-WIAC pick in 2009, the first year the WIAC sponsored men's soccer. Gehn and Buchholz played key roles on the 2007 team that scored the second most goals in school history (54), and compiled the third highest point total (152).
All three were members of the 2007 team that earned a berth into the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III tournament and the 2009 team that took the inaugural WIAC title, also earning a national playoff berth. Richgels helped the 2010 team to a second WIAC title and an NCAA DIII tournament run to the sweet sixteen. The three years they played together (2007-2009) UW-W went 36-14-8, a .690 winning percentage.
