49ers Defeat Campbell, 2-0, For Their 5th Straight Win
CHARLOTTE, NC – The 14th-ranked Charlotte 49ers (7-1) behind goals by Guiseppe Gentile and Evan James defeated Campbell (3-4-1), 2-0, for their fifth straight win in front of 2,693 people which was the third largest crowd in school history.
“We had a great crowd tonight,” Charlotte coach Jeremy Gunn said. “It was perfect weather for soccer and the field was in great shape. I thought we played fantastic soccer in the first half. Overall I can’t complain about a 2-0 result.”
Charlotte took an early 1-0 lead when Gentile headed in a James cross in the 19th minute for his first career goal.
“It was awesome getting my first career goal.” Gentile said. “It was such a relief since I have been close to scoring on other occasions this year.”
Gentile nearly scored another first half goal when he blasted a shot from 20 yards out off the left post in the 22nd minute.
In the 35th minute, Charlotte nearly scored another goal when Owen Darby beat Campbell’s goalkeeper Ryan Amons but his shot just banged off the cross bar nearly bouncing into the goal.
Charlotte took a 2-0 lead when Will Mayhew played a ball to a slashing James who blasted the ball into the back of the net from about 10 yards out in the 68th minute. James goal was his team-leading fourth of the season.
“In the second half, we were making the game difficult for ourselves,” Gunn said. “Then, Evan scored a great goal which settled us down in the second half.”
James had another great scoring chance but Campbell’s Amons stopped his shot in the 74th minute.
TJ Beaulieu and James had scoring chances in the final ten minutes of the contest but both of their shots were stopped by Campbell’s Amons.
Charlotte finished the game with a 20-7 advantage in shots. James led the 49ers with five shots. Mayhew and Gentile tallied four shots apiece.
Charlotte’s defense behind the play of goalkeeper Klay Davis and defenders Charles Rodriguez, Isaac Cowles, Thomas Allen, Aaron Weldon and Anthony Perez recorded their fourth shutout of the season.
Charlotte concludes the non-conference portion of their schedule when they face #1 Maryland on the road, Tuesday, September 27 at 7:30 pm.
