49ers lose to Fullerton women
October 23, 2009
LONG BEACH - A couple of bad breaks for the Long Beach State women's soccer team resulted in a pair of goals for Cal State Fullerton as the 49ers dropped a 2-0 decision to the Titans Thursday afternoon at George Allen Field.
LBSU fell to 5-9-2 overall and 1-4-0 in Big West Conference play, while CSF improved to 4-8-4, 2-3-1 BWC.
The two teams were locked in a defensive battle in a scoreless first half with Cal State Fullerton holding a narrow 6-4 advantage in shots.
The Beach came out aggressively after the break as they dominated possession, but it was the Titans who were able to find the back of the net.
At the 56:18 mark, Claudia Munoz sent a corner kick to the middle of the box where Stacey Fox was able to get a foot on the ball in the middle of a crowd as her shot went just over LBSU goalkeeper Emily Kingsborough.
The 49ers had a chance to even the score in the 63rd minute when they were awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box. Junior Karina Camacho stepped up and hit a solid shot, but Titan goalkeeper Jordan Santos made the right move and was able to deflect the ball over the crossbar. Three minutes and 46 seconds later, LBSU had another good opportunity to tie the game as junior Lindsay Bullock headed a cross that hit the near post and deflected back into play.
CSF went on to score again at the 70:08 mark when Christina Murillo took a shot from about 20 yards out that went off the fingertips of Kingsborough, bounced off the post and over the goal line.
LBSU out shot the Titans 17-to-12 and held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. Camacho and Bullock had three attempts apiece, while Kingsborough recorded four saves.
Long Beach State returns to George Allen Field on Sunday, Oct. 25, when it plays host to UC Riverside at 2 p.m. PT. The 49ers will honor Jenn Brooks, Chantel Hubbard and Sarah Strohl before the match on Senior Day.
