#5 Warhawks Win for 10th Time

September 28, 2015

A three goal first half propelled the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team to their tenth win this season. The fifth-ranked Warhawks topped Lake Forest 3-2 to move to 10-1 while the Foresters drop to 5-3-0. This is the 17th time in the last 19 seasons that the Warhawks have reached double-digit wins.

Monday's match was the fourth in six days for UW-Whitewater, and the final in a four-game homestand.

The Warhawks wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Kyle Clancy (Palatine, Ill./Palatine)sent a long ball down field to Jordan Kayser (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) who beat the keeper with his fifth goal of the season to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead just 33 seconds into the match.

Lake Forest retaliated five and a half minutes later when Themis Mourikes fired a long shot that snuck past Warhawk goalkeeper Alex Buchman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford).

In the 21st minute Dylan Hottsmith (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) made a great individual effort to win the ball and then found Kayser for his second goal of the game and a 2-1 lead.

With the half winding down, the Foresters were whistled for a foul, setting up a direct free kick forJustin Stanko (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North). The 6'8 defender ripped a shot to the lower left corner for a 3-1 lead as the half expired.

Mourikes brought the Foresters to within one on another deep shot that found the back of the net, but the Warhawk defense stiffened the remainder of the half as UW-W went on to win.

The second half, although there was only one goal, was very intense. Lake Forest fired off 12 of their 19 shots in the second frame. Buchman made three saves in the second half and five in the match.

Loras is up next for UW-Whitewater. The two teams will play for the Hawk Cup currently held by Loras after a 3-0 win last season. The match is slated for Wednesday, September 30 at 7:30 pm in Dubuque, Iowa.
