RALEIGH - The sixth-ranked NC State men's soccer team (5-1-0) picked up its fifth victory of the season on Tuesday afternoon, defeating visiting Quinnipiac by a final score of 1-0 on a hot afternoon at Dail Soccer Stadium.
Junior Gabriel Machado scored his third match-winning goal of the season, finding the back of the net in the 56th minute thanks to assists from teammates Ivy Brisma and Caleb Martinez. Sophomore goalkeeper Leon Krapf made two saves en route to earning the 10th shutout of his career (24 matches).
The Wolfpack outshot the Bobcats (0-4-1) by a 17-6 margin Tuesday afternoon. Quinnipiac goalkeeper Jared Mazzola had a very strong afternoon in goal, stopping seven of NC State’s eight shots that were on target.
Postgame Notes
-NC State is now 4-0-0 in Raleigh this season.
-Tuesday's match was the first meeting between NC State and Quinnipiac.
-The match was initially scheduled to be played at 7 pm but was moved to a 12:30 start due to anticipated inclement weather.
-The Wolfpack was without 2017 ACC Freshman of the Year Manny Perez due to his recent selection to the U.S. U-20 Men's National Team.
The teams played a scoreless first half that featured plenty of opportunities. NC State outshot Quinnipiac by an 8-5 margin, with Bobcat goalkeeper Jared Mazzola coming up big on multiple occasions by making four saves. David Loera and Machado each had three total shots in the first half while a total of four Wolfpack players recorded at least one apiece.
Machado’s goal featured an unusual combination of skill and fortune. Martinez crossed the ball in from the right wing to classmate Brisma, who got a foot on it as he was nearly out of bounds to play it back into the penalty area. The pass took a deflection off a Quinnipiac defender and popped out to Machado, who hit an exceptionally difficult volley with his left foot off the ground and the back of a defender before it found its way into the back of the net.
NC State returns to Atlantic Coast Conference play on Friday evening at Pittsburgh. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm with live coverage provided by ACC Network Extra.
