DENVER – The [8/13] University of Denver men’s soccer team got first half goals on either side of a 38-minute lightning delay to defeat [-/RV] Saint Louis on Thursday night at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
Denver’s backline held the visitors without a shot and conceded just one corner in the 90 minutes, the first time the Pioneers have done so in their Division I history.
Junior Kortne Ford (Greeley, Colo.) netted a 37th minute opener, his third goal in the last four games off set pieces. Ford got on the end of a redshirt-senior midfielder Karsten Hanlin (Centennial, Colo.) free kick from 30 yards down the right channel. Hanlin’s assist is his first of the campaign and the eighth of the senior’s career.
Redshirt-junior Blake Elder (Fort Worth, Texas) scored for the third game running to double the Pioneers advantage in the 41st minute. Denver’s 6 and 8 led to the goal as senior Sam Hamilton (Evergreen, Colo.) and junior Graham Smith (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) connected passes at the top of the D before slipping in Elder behind the Saint Louis (1-2-2) backline to setup the junior’s finish off the far post and in.
Elder’s goal is his third as a Pioneer and his sixth collegiate goal. Hamilton picked up his fourth assist of 2016 and his eighth in Crimson and Gold, while Smith got his fourth collegiate assist and his first as a Pioneer.
The Pioneers finished with a 9-0 edge in shots and a 6-1 advantage in corners.
