DENVER – Summit League Offensive Player of the Year Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored his 28th goal of the season to take the [9/14] University of Denver men’s soccer team past Eastern Illinois 1-0 in the first of two Summit League Semifinals on Thursday at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
Sophomore Jacob Stensson (Stockholm, Sweden) found the run of senior attacking midfielder Moshe Perez (Shim’a, Israel) in Denver’s attacking half to setup the 12th minute breakthrough. Perez played Shinyashiki in behind down the right side of the box. Shinyashiki dribbled to the end line, and pulled the ball away from the diving Eastern Illinois keeper and fired it into the open side netting for the 51st goal of his career. Stensson’s assist was his eighth of the season, while Perez tallied his sixth of his first season in Crimson and Gold.
Shinyashiki’s 28 goals on the season puts the Denver senior above what Denver’s Division I career record was before Shinyashiki broke it earlier this season.
The cleansheet was Denver’s 10th of the season, including the fourth solo shutout of the campaign from Summit League Goalkeeper of the Year Will Palmquist (Denver, Colo.).
Denver outshot Eastern Illinois 12-4 in the match, taking three of the four corner kicks in the 90 minutes.
With the win on Thursday, Denver improved to 12-7-2 in league tournaments, including 6-5 in semifinals.
