A Trio of Flames Score in Win over Howard
LYNCHBURG, VA. – Tim Harbison, Blessing Tahuona and Sachem Wilson each scored a goal as the Liberty Flames swept past the Howard Bison, 3-0, in a non-conference match, Tuesday at Osborne Stadium.
Tahuona gave Liberty a 1-0 edge with a goal in the first half, while Harbison and Wilson each netted a marker in the second half.
Liberty moves to 6-5 on the year, while Howard drops to 0-12. Five of Liberty’s six wins have been shutouts.
The Flames controlled play for most of the opening half, as the Bison looked to counter-attack. Liberty outshot Howard, 12-3 in the period.
After Bison goalkeeper Eric Hamilton made a diving stop of a Wilson shot during the 19th minute, Tahuona put the Flames in front with his second goal of the year less than two minutes later. Forward Kyle Breitmeyer made a long run up the right side of the field and pushed a pass to Wilson at the top of the 18-yard box. Wilson inserted a pass into the left side of the box for Tahouna, who ripped a shot into the lower, left-hand corner for a 1-0 Liberty lead.
During the 40th minute, Breitmeyer came free for a shot, but Hamilton corralled the attempt, as Liberty headed to halftime with a one-goal lead.
The Flames opened the second half on the attack and their constant pressure yielded a penalty kick. After a foul inside the penalty area, Harbison converted the ensuing penalty kick at 52:09 to extend Liberty’s advantage to 2-0. The goal was Harbison’s fourth of the year. The midfielder has netted a goal in three out of the last four Liberty contests.
Wilson put the game out of reach during the 62nd minute. Midfielder Jonatan Torres flipped a pass forward to the sophomore midfielder, putting him one-on-one with the Howard goalkeeper at the top of the box. Wilson placed a shot into the far, lower right corner for his team-leading fifth goal of the season, upping the Flames’ lead to what proved to be the final score of 3-0.
Liberty outshot Howard, 25-5, and held a 13-1 advantage on corner kicks for the match.
Goalkeeper Jeremy Lee recorded the first shutout of his Liberty career, making one save for the Flames. Hamilton made seven saves between the posts for Howard.
After taking the first two games of three straight home games, Liberty will finish the span by returning to Big South action, Friday night. The Flames will welcome the Presbyterian Blue Hose to Osborne Stadium as part of the university’s Homecoming Weekend. Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
