ADDISON GIVES DSU FIRST GREAT WEST VICTORY
October 18, 2012
DOVER, Del. – Tied, 1-1, in the 62nd minute, freshman Taylor Addison (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) scored the go-ahead goal as the Delaware State University women’s soccer team nabbed their first Great West Conference victory of the season with a 2-1 win over South Carolina State University Thursday evening at Alumni Stadium.
Addison used her speed for her second goal of the game as she took the ball a minimum of 50 yards down the right side of the field to the east goal. She then took Bulldog goalie Mariah Hebbe one-on-one and won the battle, placing the ball in the top right portion of the net to give the Hornets a 2-1 lead.
The freshman forward tied the game in the 34th minute, with an open net goal from five yards out. Addison was assisted by junior Kelly Pelz-Butler (Silver Spring, Md.) on the play.
The goals were Addison’s third and fourth of her rookie year. In total, she recorded five shots with three on goal in the game.
SCSU got on board first, with a goal from Blanca Barrio in the 27th minute. Stephanie Searle assisted the forward’s shot that entered the goal just under the crossbar in the center of the net. The goal was Barrio’s fifth of the season.
DSU sophomore goalie Katelyn Koslosky (East Islip, N.Y.) earned her first win of the season with four saves in 90 minutes of play for the Hornets (2-8-1; 1-1-0 GWC). Hebbe took the loss to move to 4-6-0 on the year for South Carolina State (7-9-0; 1-3-0 GWC).
The two teams each tallied nine shots in the game while the Bulldogs led in corner kicks, 5-2.
In addition to Addision’s five shots, Delaware State saw two shots from sophomore Kaitlyn Schech (Abingdon, Md.) and one each from freshmen Julia Bossert (Kendall Park, N.J.) and Danielle Valente (Wallingford, Conn.).
The Hornets wrap up the home portion of their schedule this Sunday against GWC foe Howard. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m. at Alumni Stadium. Fans are encouraged to come early as Delaware State will honor seniors Kelsey Gibson (Elizabethtown, N.Y.), Jeanette Salgado (Bergenfield, N.J.), Theresa Wappett (Queensbury, N.Y.) and Candace Wyre (Smyrna, Del.) pre-game.
