Adelphi Comes Up Short Against #3 St. Rose
Garden City, N.Y. – The women's soccer team hosted the #3 Golden Knights of the College of St. Rose earlier this evening on Motamed Field. Scoreless through the first half, the visitors got on the board in the 52nd minute which went unanswered, resulting in a 1-0 Panther loss. Adelphi suffers their first defeat of the season and moves to 3-1-1, 1-1-1 NE-10 while the Golden Knight's record remains unblemished at 6-0, 3-0 NE-10.
While the visitors managed 10 shots compared to Adelphi's four in the opening half, play was fairly even as each team had about equal time of possession. Both squads had two opportunities to go ahead, but were met by saves. Samantha Lanza found some room just inside the box, but her attempt at the right side of the net was stopped by a diving Jessica Gerski. St. Rose's Sydney Bond returned the favor with an attempt of her own, but Sam Whitney kept the visitors at bay. Melissa Duarte tested Gerski as well but was met with the same result in the 29th minute.
The Panther's midfield and back line prevailed and held steady throughout the first 45 minutes, blocking four of St. Rose's 10 shots; three of them in sequential order.
In the 55th minute, the Golden Knights capitalized on a break when Emily Meeks tapped a loose ball over to Jennifer Busk to break the scoreless deadlock and put the Albany based squad up 1-0. The Panther's matched their shooting efforts from the first with another four shots in the second frame but came up empty. With nearly 30 minutes left to play, the Brown and Gold had perhaps their best opportunity when a St. Rose foul just a step outside of the box set up a free kick for Donna Liotine from the right. However, her attempt sailed just wide left off her mark.
With time winding down, the Panthers were unable to respond and find the equalizer as the clock hit 90 minutes with St. Rose coming out on top, 1-0.
Statistically, St. Rose outshot Adelphi, 17-8 and had a 10-2 corner advantage. Whitney made four saves in the loss while her counterpart was credited with three.
Coach's Thoughts on the Game
"I think we proved to ourselves tonight that we are a real team," stated Head Coach Chris Armas. "We showed spirit, fight, heart, and went toe to toe with one of the best teams in the country. Any coach would be proud of that effort and I believe wholeheartedly in the group of girls we have."
