Adelphi Defeats Bentley, 2-1
Box Score
Garden City, N.Y. – The women's soccer team hosted the Falcons of Bentley University earlier this afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. After giving up a goal in the first, Adelphi stormed back in the second with two unanswered scores to come away with the 2-1 victory. With the win, the Panthers advance to 7-1-2, 5-1-1 NE-10 while Bentley falls to 2-7-2, 1-6-2 NE-10.
Bentley struck first in the 21st minute when Sydney Spiegel streaked down the right side, broke a Panther defender to create space and then found the empty gap between Sam Whitney and the post for the first goal of the game.
Aimee Goldstein accounted for half of Adelphi's eight shot attempts in the first and put three of them on the mark, but were met by saves from Falcon keeper, Paige Laliberte. Michelle Brown came dangerously close to netting the tying goal in the 32nd minute, but her shot from 20 yards out sailed just inches high over the crossbar.
Adelphi found the equalizer in the early stages of the second with a little help from Bentley's defense. After a pass sent in from Sarah Barone Stern to teammate Samantha Lanza, the ball was deflected into the visitor net by one of the Falcon's defenders. Lanza was credited with the goal while Barone Stern earned the assist.
In the 83rd minute, a Bentley foul inside the box resulted in a penalty kick for the Brown and Gold. Donna Liotine took the attempt and made it count, firing the ball into the top right shelf for the go-ahead goal which proved to be the game winner as well; her first of the season.
Adelphi led 17-7 in shots and had a 5-1 corner kick advantage. Whitney made four saves in net as she picked up her seventh win of the season.
