Adelphi Defeats Southern Connecticut, 3-1
New Haven, CT – The women's soccer team took on the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University earlier this afternoon in a non-conference contest. After getting on the board first, the Panthers managed to tack on a second goal in the first and then capped the victory with a third goal in the second frame to come away with a 3-1 win. With the win, the Panthers advance to 3-0-1, 1-0-1 NE-10 while the Owls drop to 1-4, 0-2 NE-10.
Once again, it was Olivia Czavar who provided part of the Panther fire power with her fourth goal in as many games. The score came in the 16th minute after she picked up a loose ball and found the lower left corner of the net. Less than five minutes later, teammate Victoria Antonino followed up with her third goal of the year after she sent the ball passed keeper Rachael Hafer for the second goal of the game.
Southern Connecticut got one back in the early stages of the second on a Suzane Pires score on an assist from Bryana Poulin, but it's all they would get. The Panthers responded with an insurance goal from sophomore Samantha Lanza in the 86th minute on an unassisted play; her first of the season
The Panther's won the statistical battle as well, out-shooting the Owls 11-6 and having a 2-1 corner advantage. Sam Whitney logged all 90 minutes in net and made two saves as she picked up her third win of the year.
Coach's Thoughts on the Game
"Southern Connecticut is a very good team and they made it difficult for us," stated Head Coach Chris Armas. "Once again, our fighting spirit, along with some good stretches of soccer, gave us a chance to win this game. It was an important NE-10 victory. The girls really earned it tonight."
