Adelphi Falls to Franklin Pierce, 2-1
Box Score
Garden City, N.Y. – Earlier this afternoon, the women's soccer team took on the Ravens of Franklin Pierce in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. A pair of visitor goals before the half forced Adelphi to play down from the remaining 45 minutes. They managed to get one back, but their charge was halted, resulting in a 2-1 loss. The Panthers' record now stands at 5-3-2, 2-3-2 NE-10 while the Ravens advance to 5-3-1, 4-3-1 NE-10.
Adelphi came out aggressive and took possession of the all right off the bat. Less than five minutes in, Alison Gronenthal and Kaitlin Monteith had a beautiful give and go with Monteith feeding the ball up field. Gronenthal put in a nice move down on the right side near the goal and tapped it back to Monteith, but her shot was blocked by the Raven defense.
Franklin Pierce had few attempts, but made them count. Their first opportunity came in the 21st minute when Talita Pereira streaked down left side and passed it up toward the middle of the field to teammate Hannah Weagle. Just as she broke inside the box, she was met by Cathleen Reardon who made a sliding tackle to clear the ball out back to midfield, eliminating the threat.
However, in the 28th minute, Franklin Pierce cashed in on their second opportunity when Pereira picked up a loose ball in front of the Panther net and managed to send a pass through traffic. Fernanda Marques received it and looped a shot just over keeper Sam Whitney to give Franklin Pierce the 1-0 lead.
In an attempt to get that one back, Gronenthal caught a break, shaking off a defender just outside of the box on the left side, juked right and let a shot rip, but a diving save by Casey Edward kept it a 1-0 game.
In the 41st minute, the Ravens struck again. This time, Hannah Weagle picked up a loose ball off of a shot that was stopped by Whitney and found the back of the net from point blank, putting the Panthers in a 2-0 hole.
Action in the second got dicey as each team began playing more physical. Both sides exchanged shots and had their own respective scoring opportunities, but were unable to capitalize up until the 78th minute. A textbook cross from Gronenthal connected with Olivia Czavar in the middle of the box. A high, light tap over the keeper found the back of the net, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
In last minute attempts, the Panthers pressed to push overtime, but were unable to find the equalizer, and suffered their third loss of the season.
Adelphi held a 10-8 shot advantage but were at a 7-6 disadvantage in corner attempts. Whitney made four saves while her counterpart, Edward, matched that.
The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday, October 2 when they travel to Pleasantville, N.Y. to take on the Setters of Pace in a conference matchup. First kick is slated for a 4 pm start.
