Adelphi Plays Assumption to a 1-1 Draw
Worcester, MA – The women's soccer team took on the Greyhounds of Assumption College in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup earlier this evening. Despite getting on the board first, the Panthers allowed the hosts to find the equalizer in the final minutes of the game, forcing two eventual overtime periods before the contest ended in a 1-1 draw. The Panthers now move to 4-1-2, 2-1-2 NE-10 while Assumption's record stands at 4-0-3, 2-0-3 NE-10.
Adelphi registered 10 shots throughout the 110 minute game and put six of them on goal. Comparatively, Assumption was also very active on their offensive end with 16 total shots, half of which were on target. Statistically, it appeared to turn out to be a goalkeepers duel as each team's net minders were busy all night long. Adelphi's Sam Whitney made a season high seven saves while her counterpart, Rachel Edgin was credited with six.
Samantha Jehle and Kelsey Malles both were credited with one shot, each of which were on target while Victoria Antonino and Donna Liotine combined for six shots, half of them on net. However, it was not until the 67th minute when Sarah Barone Stern set up the scoring opportunity for teammate Olivia Czavar who found the back of the net for her team leading fifth goal. The assist was Barone Stern's first of her collegiate career.
Seven different players for Assumption had at least one shot attempt with Paige Radomski, Andrea Bates and Kelsey Imondi combining for 11 of the team's 16 total attempts. Of the Greyhound's nine second half shots, Radomski's was the only one that managed to get passed Whitney in the latter stages of the game. The attempt from 20 yards out proved to be the equalizer in the 88th minute which forced overtime.
Through the two ten minute overtime periods, Adelphi managed just two shots while Assumption muscled out five. However, both teams held strong and would not budge, forcing the decision to a tie.
Coach's Thoughts on the Game
"It was another hard fought game in which our girls put forth an outstanding effort," stated Head Coach Chris Armas. "It was disappointing to not take the full three points, but I believe it will be a valuable point down the road. The great news is that we are a team that competes in a real way and sticks together. I'm very proud of the girls."
