Adelphi Plays Assumption to a tie, 1-1
Box Score
Garden City, N.Y. – The women's soccer team took on the Greyhounds of Assumption College in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Each team swapped a pair of goals in the second to force two overtimes, but either team was able to notch the game winner. With the tie, the Panthers move to 5-2-2, 2-2-2 NE-10 while Assumption's record stands at 2-4-2, 2-2-2 NE-10.
The first half got off to a slow start, but action picked up 15 minutes in when Assumption's Justine DiDonato sent a pass to Liz Blasser who found herself one on one with the keeper on the right side, but Sam Whitney came out and challenged to make the save.
Less than two minutes later, the same Greyhound duo created commotion in front of the net and it was Blasser that picked up the loose ball and tapped a soft shot that slowly rolled toward the Panther net, but missed just wide right of the post by inches.
With 12:34 left in the first, Aimee Goldstein sent a pass behind the Greyhoud defense where Kaitlin Monteith tracked down the ball to find herself with just the keeper to beat. However, the one on one opportunity was taken away as the referee blew the whistle indicating offsides.
Nearly 90 seconds later, Alison Gronenthal had her first opportunity of the game as she broke through Assumption's back line, but was met by Allison Bruder with a save. In one of the final threats of the half, Monteith sent a beautiful low cross to a waiting Goldstein at the top of the box, but again Bruder came up with the save to keep the contest knotted at 0-0.
In the second, the visitors wasted no time capitalizing on a defensive miscue by the Panthers in the 48th minute. Before the ball can be cleared out, Kessler picked up the loose ball and sent a cross to the left side of the net, connecting with Bates who gave her team the 1-0 lead.
Adelphi fired back with 12 shots in the second half, only one of which was on goal, but a number of them missed by just a few feet. In the 59th minute, Masiello passed the ball through the Greyhound defenders and found teammate Monteith who positioned herself for a clean shot and beat the keeper to level the playing field at 1-1.
Although there were many close calls, the Panthers would not be able to net the go ahead goal before the end of regulation, forcing overtime.
Neither team would be able to break one another in the first 10 minutes of extra time. In the 114th minute, Adelphi was charged with a foul, giving Assumption a free kick. Taken by Haley Stack, she found Kessler who headed the ball in toward the goal, but was met by a diving stop by Whitney to keep the game alive.
However, the clock would reach the 120th minute with the score stuck at 1-1 resulting in a tie.
Whitney made seven stops on the night while her counterpart made four.
The Panthers are back in action on Saturday, October 29 when they take on the Ravens of Franklin Pierce at 1pm on Motamed Field in a Northeast-10 matchup. You can watch the game at www.aupanthers.tv or follow along with live stats.
