Adelphi Rallies, Down Knights, 2-1
Flushing, N.Y. – The women's soccer team defeated the Knights of Queens College in a non-conference meeting earlier this afternoon by a score of 2-1. The former East Coast Conference rival went up early 1-0 but the Panthers rallied with two goals in the second to come away with their second with of the season.
In an evenly contested first half, the Panthers managed three shots, two of which were on goal but were met with saves by the Knight's keeper, Mersina Onesto. Queens registered two attempts with only one on target, but made it count. Lorena Russi, on a feed from teammate Lisa Cassata, managed to beat Adelphi goal keeper, Sam Whitney, to take the early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute.
The Brown and Gold had three corner kicks but were unable to convert on any of them as Queen's defense withstood the attempts. Victoria Antonino, Kelsey Simpson and Kelsey Malles accounted for the Panther's three first half shots.
In a physical second half, fueled by nine shots, the Panthers offense responded with back-to-back scores by Olivia Czavar and Melissa Duarte. In the 64th minute, Duarte sent a pass in to Czavar who beat Onesto on the far side to knot the game at 1-1. The goal marked Czavar's second of the season. On the ensuing goal in the 78th minute, it was Aimee Goldstein who picked up her second assist of the year after sending a pass in to Duarte who connected on the header for what would be the eventual game winning goal.
Whitney was credited with three saves and recorded her second win in as many games while the Panthers won the statistical battle, outshooting the Knights 12-5 and having more corner attempts, 7-3.
The Panthers are back in action on Saturday, September 4 when they host the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire in their first Northeast-10 Conference contest. First kick is slated for 4pm on Motamed Field. Live stats will be available as well as a webcast of the event. Twitter updates throughout the game will also be available.
