Adelphi Stuns Top Seeded AIC, 2-0
Box Score
Springfield, MA – Earlier this evening, the #8 Panthers took on the #1 seeded Yellowjackets of American International College in the Northeast-10 Championship Quarterfinal. It took nearly 82 minutes but Emily Masiello made the upset possible, giving the Panthers the go-ahead goal and then adding an insurance goal in the 90th minute to stun the #10 nationally ranked Yellowjackets on their own field. With the win, Adelphi advances to 10-6-3 and will advance to the semifinal round while AIC makes their tournament exit with a record of 13-3-2.
In the first half, Meghan Carey kicked off the action with the first shot of the game and the first of her six attempts. The Yellowjackets doubled up the Panthers with 10 attempts of their own as one of them came dangerously close to finding the back of the net when Caroline Boyce's shot hit the crossbar in the 40th minute.
Things heated up in the second with both offenses ramping up the intensity. Right off the bat, AIC's Alyssa Werbicki and Carey exchanged shots on goal but were both met with saves by the team's respective keepers.
Werbicki had perhaps the Yellowjacket's best chance when she found herself just a few yards out from the Panther net, but missed just high in the 81st minute.
In the 82nd minute, the scoreless tie was finally broken when Masiello notched her seventh goal of the season and first of the game to give the Panthers the go-ahead goal and put AIC in a hole with less than 10 minutes remaining to play. Scored off of a corner kick, Masiello's send in hooked in toward the net and tipped off of keeper Samantha Tabak's fingers and finished in the back of the net.
Masiello put the icing on the cake in the 90th minute with her seventh goal of the year on a break away with just 17 seconds left on the clock, beating Tabak for the second time and securing a spot in the NE-10 Championship Semifinals in the process.
The Panthers were outshot 18-16 and were at a 5-4 corner disadvantage. Sam Whitney made six saves in the win while her counterpart made five. Melissa Rubin, Kaitlin Monteith and Amanda Reverberi were also credited with two shots while Alison Gronenthal tallied one.
“First, I would like to congratulate AIC on a terrific season,” stated Head Coach Chris Armas. “I am so proud of the way our girls played tonight. It was a complete team effort for 90 minutes and they went out and earned an important victory for themselves and our program.”
The Brown and Gold return to action on Friday, November 2 when they take on the fourth seeded Warriors of Merrimack College (11-7-1) with the game time to be announced. Merrimack defeated the #5 Ravens of Franklin Pierce in a 1-0 overtime thriller to advance.
