Garden City, N.Y. – The women's soccer team closed out their final home stand of the regular season earlier this evening against the #8 Yellow Jackets of American International College. The Brown and Gold's defense, as well as keeper Sam Whitney, was pressured throughout the duration of the game but withstood a bombardment of Yellow Jacket shots. After 110 minutes of play, the contest concluded with the score knotted at 0-0. With the draw, the Panthers move to 10-1-4, 8-1-4 NE-10 while AIC's record now stands at 13-1-2, 8-1-2 NE-10.
The Panthers played mostly on the defensive end through the opening 45 minutes as AIC held possession of the ball as shown by their 8-0 shooting margin over Adelphi. The Yellow Jacket's Sonia Basma accounted for three attempts but all three were stopped by Whitney; of which one save came on a diving effort to deflect the ball away from the net and keep the score knotted a 0-0.
The second was a little more evenly contested despite the 12-1 shot advantage on the stat sheet which was held by AIC. At the 60:47 mark, Basma once again threatened when she penetrated into Panther territory, created space and lofted a shot that missed just wide right.
The Brown and Gold managed just one shot through the end of regulation and it was taken by Bianca Lastra. However, it was off the mark as they headed into overtime with the scoreboard still showing 0-0.
Within the first three minutes of extra time, the Panthers had an opportunity when Victoria Antonino intercepted a ball at midfield and sprinted down the right side but had it stripped away by two AIC defenders.
Despite the two extra periods, either side was able to score the game winner. Adelphi was out-shot 26-1 and were at a 6-0 corner disadvantage. Whitney was on point throughout the game and made a career high 14 saves.
