Adelphi Tops Merrimack, 2-1

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's soccer team played host to the Warriors of Merrimack College on Saturday evening at Motamed Field in a Northeast-10 contest. Behind a first half goal from Bianca Lastra and second half game winner from Victoria Antonino, the Panthers came away with a 2-1 victory on Senior Day. With the victory, the Panthers improve to 10-1-3 overall and 8-1-3 in the NE-10, while the Warriors fall to 8-5-2 and 6-4-2 in the conference.
In a half in which they dominated total shots by a 9-3 margin and 6-0 corner advantage, the Panthers found themselves scoreless against the Warriors for nearly the entire duration. With less than a minute remaining in the opening act, Lastra took a cross from Samantha Lanza and beat Merrimack keeper Nicole Curtis high to her left to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Antonino doubled the Panthers' tally in the 54th minute, as she turned and shot from eight yards out from the right side. Her fifth goal of the season passed Curtis and doubled the Panthers' lead to 2-0.
Jenna Zechner provided the only offense for the visitors on the night, as she tapped the ball behind Sam Whitney just two minutes later to bring the score to 2-1. The Panther defense did the rest as they allowed the Warriors to take only four shots for the remainder of the half, securing the team's 10th victory.
The Brown and Gold out-shot the Warriors 18-9, and held a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks. Whitney made three saves in the win while Curtis made seven saves in the losing effort.
