Adelphi Tops Pace, 2-0
Box Score
Worcester, MA – The women's soccer team came away with their sixth win of the season after turning away the Setters of Pace University by a score of 2-0 in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. A pair of goals in each frame, coupled with a tenacious defense and top notch goal keeping, propel the Brown and Gold to 6-1-2 overall and 4-1-2 NE-10 while Pace drops to 2-8-1, 2-5-1 NE-10.
Despite being out-shot by a 5-4 margin in the first, Adelphi managed to control most of half playing in Setter territory. Each side was selective with their shots; Pace put three of their five attempts on target, but were met by saves from Sam Whitney while the Panther's Kelsey Malles managed to slip one passed the visitor's defense.
Just seven ticks into the 38th minute, Victoria Antonino sent a leading pass to a streaking Malles up the middle of the field. Receiving the pass deep into Setter territory, Malles tapped the ball over a charging Pace keeper and lightly sent the ball to the back of the net for her first goal of the season, and the Panther's first of the game.
Olivia Czavar added an insurance goal in the second at the 60:22 mark; her team leading sixth of the year. After making its way through a swarm of blue jerseys, she picked up a deflected pass from teammate Melissa Rubin in front of the net. Upon gaining possession, she gently tapped it right past a diving Leslie Robertson, and put the finishing touches on the 2-0 victory.
The Brown and Gold out-shot the visitors 13-10 but were at a 3-2 corner disadvantage. Whitney, the NE-10 Goalkeeper of the Week, made six saves on the evening.
Coach's Thoughts on the Game
"It's no secret when you look at the standings that things are tight," said Head Coach Chris Armas. "Understanding how valuable three points are tonight is what was important coming in. Once again, we have to give credit to our entire team. Our effort, one through 27, whether the girls were on or off the field, the spirit was very high and it was a great team effort."
